Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University softball team swept Caldwell University on Wednesday afternoon, powered by a clutch three-run inside-the-park home run from
Amanda Chavarria.
Series History:
- Prior to today's doubleheader, the programs had faced off 36 times dating back to the 2002 season.
- Adelphi (32-16, 26-6 NE10) is now 22-16 all-time over the Cougars (25-17, 15-3 CACC).
Game One: Adelphi 5, Caldwell 4
Highlights:
- Chavarria blasted a three-run inside-the-park home run.
- Tori Parente went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
- Emma Priest and Faith Wagner each recorded two hits, with Wagner scoring twice and Priest swiping a base.
- Jenna Plue tossed a complete game, striking out eight while allowing just two earned runs to earn the win.
How It Happened:
- The Cougars struck first, stringing together three hits, before Plue worked out of a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage to one run.
- Adelphi responded in the bottom of the second to take a one-run lead. Back-to-back hits from Maddy Moore and Wagner opened the inning, and Makayla Comer's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Parente followed with a single up the middle to give the Panthers the lead.
- Caldwell regained the advantage in the top of the fourth after a leadoff walk and an Adelphi error set the stage for a two-run double.
- In the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers answered with a three-run rally. Kaitlyn Klepper led off with a walk, and two batters later Wagner singled to right. After working a 1-2 count, Chavarria drove a ball into the left-center gap that neither outfielder could reach, allowing her to circle the bases for the inside-the-park home run and give Adelphi a two-run edge.
- Caldwell cut the deficit to one in the seventh with back-to-back two-out hits, but Plue shut the door to secure the win.
Game Two: Adelphi 8, Caldwell 3
Highlights:
- Ellen Tarjan recorded two hits, drove in two runs, and scored once.
- Jaylen Wright went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
- Priest, Moore, and Parente each tallied two hits, with Moore and Parente both scoring.
- Lily Kenney threw a complete game, striking out eight in her ninth win of the season.
How It Happened:
- Adelphi got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Wright singled, and Tarjan followed with a gap shot to left-center to bring her home.
- The squad extended their lead in the second. After a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a Caldwell error plated one run, Parente and Priest added back-to-back hits to score another.
- In the third, Adelphi added to its lead as Moore singled and advanced to third on defensive miscues before scoring on an error.
- Caldwell responded with a three-run fourth inning, that was highlighted by a two-run double and an RBI single to cut the Panthers' lead to one.
