Softball Explodes for 10 Runs in Split at Bentley

Waltham, Mass. – Adelphi University's softball team split its doubleheader with Bentley University on Friday afternoon, highlighted by an offensive outburst in game one.

Series History:
  • Prior to today's doubleheader, the programs faced off 24 times dating back to the 2010 season.
  • Adelphi (25-13, 21-3 NE10) was 20-4 all-time against the Falcons (14-26, 9-15 NE10) entering Friday.
Game One: Adelphi 10, Bentley 0 (F/5)

Highlights:
  • Maddy Moore went 2-for-2 with a three-run home run and scored twice.
  • Emma Priest also enjoyed a 2-for-2 performance, knocking in three runs and scoring once.
  • Makayla Comer had two hits in three at-bats, scoring twice and driving in a RBI.
  • Jenna Plue allowed just two hits in five innings while striking out four.
How it Happened:
  • Adelphi got on the board in the first inning, as Moore swatted her third home run of the season after Priest and Kaitlyn Klepper drew walks in front of her to quickly jump out to a 3-0 lead.
  • The Panther offense stayed aggressive in the second, bringing two more runs across. Tori Parente led off with a single, before Reeghan McCarthy was hit by a pitch. Priest then moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. From there, Jaylen Wright grounded out and Ellen Tarjan ripped a double into center field to score both runners.
  • The Brown and Gold extended their lead to 8-0 in the third. Following a pair of free passes to start the inning, Comer and Priest both roped extra-base hits to bring home three more Adelphi runs.
  • The Cats put together a two-run rally in the fifth to reach the mercy rule. After Comer singled to begin the inning, Parente drew a walk. Following a flyout that advanced Comer to third, Priest continued her big game with a single through the right side to score Comer. Wright then brought Parente home with a groundout to extend the lead to double digits.
  • Plue retired the Falcons in order in the bottom of the fifth to end Game One early.
Game Two: Bentley 6, Adelphi 1

Highlights:
  • Moore had a hit and drew two walks in the contest.
  • Lil Kenney went six innings in the circle while striking out eight.
  • Comer, Klepper, Priest and Tarjan each tallied a hit for the Cats.
How it Happened:
  • Bentley opened the scoring in the first, stringing together two hits in a two-out rally against Kenney to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Adelphi responded in the next inning, as Moore led off with a double into right field. After Faith Wagner moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, Moore scored on a wild pitch to even the game.
  • Bentley regained a one-run lead in the third, as Jess Morrison hit a solo home run.
  • In the fourth, the Panthers loaded the bases after drawing two walks and getting a single from Comer, but all three runners were stranded.
  • Bentley extended its lead to 3-1 later in the fourth, putting together three singles while also using a sacrifice bunt against Kenney.
  • As the Panther bats stayed quiet, the Falcons once again extended their lead in the fifth. Bentley's two-run rally featured four singles and a sacrifice bunt, putting Adelphi in a five-run deficit.
  • The Cats threatened in the sixth, as Klepper doubled to left field and Moore drew a walk, but both runners were left on base.
  • In the seventh, the Brown and Gold's offense was retired in order, ending their 10-game winning streak.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 18, as they continue conference play at Bentley University. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
