Carver Strikes Out 11, Baseball Splits With No. 22 SNHU

Hookset, N.H. – The Adelphi baseball team traveled up to New Hampshire on Friday morning for the first of two doubleheaders with No. 22 Southern New Hampshire.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (20-14, 16-9 NE10) is now 11-18 against SNHU since April 2010. The last meeting between the two was a doubleheader sweep by the Penmen on April 27, 2005.

Game 1: Adelphi 4, No. 22 Southern New Hampshire 3
Highlights:

  • John Carver once again put together a dominant outing, going seven strong innings with 11 strikeouts and only two earned runs. This marks the fifth start in which Carver has struck out 10+ batters.
  • Evan Carway went 2-for-3 with two singles and the go-ahead RBIs in the eighth inning.
  • Zach DeMilt drove in two runs as Adelphi's leadoff hitter and scored once.
  • Anthony Rigogliosi scored two runs and swiped a bag.

How It Happened:

  • The first two and a half innings were scoreless until the Penmen got on the board in the top of the third.
  • A double and a walk led to an RBI single for the home team, but that was all Carver allowed, as he recorded the final two outs of the inning via strikeout.
  • With both starters locked in a pitchers' duel, the score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when SNHU added another run on a solo home run to left field.
  • Carver got through his seventh and final inning unscathed. In the eighth, the Adelphi offense took advantage of Penmen defensive miscues.
  • Back-to-back errors put L.J. Bohne and Rigogliosi on base before a third straight error resulted in Adelphi's first run of the game.
  • Johnny Catuosco was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases with nobody out.
  • SNHU's reliever got the next two Panthers to fly out to shallow right field before Carway delivered. With a single up the middle on a 2-1 count, the Adelphi first baseman drove in two to put the Brown and Gold ahead 3-2.
  • Michael Tufo retired SNHU in order in the eighth, and Adelphi added an insurance run in the ninth.
  • A Rigogliosi single and stolen base put him in scoring position for DeMilt, who delivered a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2.
  • Southern New Hampshire refused to go quietly, adding a run on another solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • Tufo recorded the next out but walked the potential tying run. After a groundout moved the runner and a two-out walk, Zach Rovner entered to secure the final out.
  • After falling behind 2-0, Rovner attacked the zone and struck out the final batter looking as the Panthers held on for a 4-3 win.

Game 2: Southern Connecticut State 22, Adelphi 1 (F/7)
Highlights:

  • Bryan McCleary went 1-for-3 as Adelphi's cleanup hitter.
  • Evan Carway recorded his third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly.
  • Eric Ressegger pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts.

How It Happened:

  • In game two, the contest was once again scoreless through two and a half innings, with SNHU getting on the board first, just as it did in the matinee.
  • This time, the Penmen struck for five runs. Five hits, a wild pitch, a walk and an Adelphi error gave the home team an early edge.
  • The Panthers were able to get one back on a Carway sacrifice fly, but SNHU extended its lead even further in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs.
  • Adelphi's offense was held in check for the remainder of the game while the Penmen poured on the runs, winning 22-1.

Up Next:

  • Head coach Mike Gaffney and the Adelphi baseball team will be back in action tomorrow to wrap up their four-game weekend set with Southern New Hampshire.
