Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Leggio Collects 12 Points in #12 Women's Lax 20-9 Win Over #18 Mercy

Garden City, N.Y. - With 60 goals in the last three games, the no. 12 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team picked up a 20-9 victory over no. 18 Mercy University Tuesday night, under the lights at Motamed Field.

Series History:
  • Mercy remains winless against the Panthers, as Adelphi si 8-0 all time dating back to the 2005 season.
  • Head coach of the Mavericks, Dawn Sachs was a member of the Panther squad that won the program's first NCAA Division II title in 2004, and added another to her playing resume in 2006.
Highlights:
  • Leggio's 12 points came courtesy of six goals and six assists - the most points for any player since the 2021 season when Alison Johnson saw 11 in four different games. The Adelphi single game record stands at 14, courtesy of Claire Petersen from the 2011 Championship run.
  • Marielle Colalillo produced a nine-point game with the help of four goals and five assists, while also causing three turnovers, scooping up three ground balls and also winning two draw controls.
  • Ashley Kolomechuk and Jullia Foppiano had six and five-point games, respectively, combining for 10 shots on goal.
  • Rita Sefransky was the team's leader in draw control wins, rounding out her evening with a new career-best at 12. The senior also scored twice and caused one turnover. Sonny Lionetti got in on the draw wins, picking up five of her own to compliment one caused turnover and a pair of ground balls.
How It Happened:
  • After Adelphi (10-4) found themselves trailing after the opening five minutes, Sefransky and Leggio tallied a pair that saw the home team take the lead. Another Mercy goal set the game at three-all but it was back-to-back strikes from Colalillo that put the team ahead for the remainder of the contest.
  • The hosts tacked on another trio of goals, but not before the Mavericks (11-3) added two of their own to come within one of the Panthers. Emma Mclam and Ashley Kolomechuk scored just over a minute apart to make it a three-goal spread.
  • The offense came alive in the third as Mercy committed four turnovers and had five green cards, making way for Adelphi to capitalize on woman-up possessions. Leggio's first of the third quarter sparked a six-goal run that extended into the fourth quarter, making it difficult for the Mavs to stage a comeback.
  • The visitors saw some life in the fourth, but the Panther attack continued to pour in goals, netting four in the final 4:38 of the game.
Up Next:
  • Adelphi will have a bye weekend and close out the regular season on Tuesday, April 21 when they host Southern Connecticut University at 5:00 p.m.
