Late Home Runs from Duignan and DeMilt Power Baseball in 9-8 Comeback Win Over Pace

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi baseball team returned home to William J. Bonomo Field on Wednesday afternoon for its third midweek tilt with conference rival Pace.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (19-13, 15-8 NE10) is now 34-24 against Pace since March 2005.
  • The last meeting between the two was an 8-4 comeback Setter win in Pleasantville last Wednesday.

Highlights:

  • Zach DeMilt drove in a team-high five runs, hitting two home runs to left field. His two-run shot in the top of the eighth proved to be the game-winner for the Panthers.
  • Erick Duignan hit his second long ball of the season, a crucial one to swing momentum into Adelphi's favor.
  • Anthony Rigogliosi was a perfect 2-for-2 as Adelphi's nine hitter, walking twice and scoring three runs.
  • Johnny Catuosco, Bryan McCleary and Giancarlo Rengifo all recorded RBIs.
  • Zach Rovner earned his first win of the campaign, pitching 1.2 innings with no earned runs.

How It Happened:

  • With neither team able to score in the first inning, it was the Panthers who scratched across the first run of the contest in the second frame.
  • Albert Ramos ripped a one-out laser triple and was driven in on an RBI groundout from Rengifo.
  • Pace responded in the top of the third, taking advantage of a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, scoring by way of a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout.
  • Rigogliosi continued to swing a hot bat, leading off the bottom of the third with a single to right field. DeMilt moved the runner over and Catuosco drove him in with a double down the right field line to tie the game.
  • Adelphi took a 3-2 lead with a McCleary RBI single up the middle.
  • Will Celentano kept the Setters quiet in the fourth before the Panthers pounced for three more runs.
  • Rengifo led the inning off with a 10-pitch walk and Rigogliosi singled again to set the table for DeMilt. On a 3-2 count, the three-time reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week smoked a home run over the left field wall to push the Adelphi lead to 6-2.
  • The Panthers ran into trouble in the fifth as the Setters were able to get their first hits of the game.
  • Two hits and a walk loaded the bases for Brayden Sweppenhiser, who tied the game with one swing, hitting a grand slam.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Cats threatened with the bases loaded themselves, but Pace was able to induce a double play to end the threat.
  • After scoreless sixth and seventh innings, Pace was able to get to the Adelphi bullpen and take an 8-6 lead in the top of the eighth.
  • Duignan had Adelphi trailing by only one soon after, with a solo home run.
  • Rigogliosi walked and, with a new pitcher on the mound, DeMilt delivered. The freshman phenom hit his second home run of the game to put the home team up 9-8 heading into the final inning.
  • Rovner got the first two outs of the inning, but the pesky Setters did not go down without a fight. A two-out single and a hit by pitch gave Pace a shot to flip the game on its head.
  • After a seven-pitch at-bat, Rovner was able to force a flyout to L.J. Bohne to secure the win.

Up Next:

  • Head coach Mike Gaffney and the Adelphi baseball team will be back in action over the weekend for an important series with first-place Southern New Hampshire.
