McCarthy's Walk-Off Ignites Caps Sweep of Pace, Softball Moves into First Place in NE10

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University softball team swept Pace University on Tuesday afternoon behind a walk-off hit from Reeghan McCarthy.

Series History:
  • Adelphi leads the season series, 2-0.
  • Prior to Tuesday's doubleheader, the programs had faced off 61 times dating back to the 2002 season.
  • Adelphi (24-12, 20-2 NE10) was 45-16 all-time against the Setters (15-21, 7-15 NE10) entering the day.
Game One: Adelphi 10, Pace 2 (F/5)

Highlights:

  • Ellen Tarjan went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a home run.
  • Emma Priest had two hits in three at-bats, scoring twice and driving in a run.
  • Faith Wagner also recorded two hits and scored twice.
  • Jenna Plue earned the win after five innings in the circle, striking out two and allowing just one earned run.

How It Happened:

  • The Setters opened the scoring in the top of the first, tagging Plue for a pair of extra-base hits to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Adelphi responded in the bottom of the inning, as Tarjan launched her fourth home run of the season over the left-center field fence to tie the game.
  • Pace regained the lead in the third inning, using a leadoff single, an Adelphi error and another base hit to move in front, 2-1.
  • The Panthers answered again in the bottom half of the frame, putting together a three-run rally behind consecutive singles from Wagner, Priest and Jaylen Wright. A Setter error, followed by sacrifice flies from Tarjan and Maddy Moore, gave Adelphi a 4-2 advantage.
  • Adelphi then broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning to end the contest early.
  • Priest got the rally started with a double that scored Wagner, who had singled to lead off the inning. Wright then reached second on an error, setting the table for Tarjan to drive in another run with a single. After Kaitlyn Klepper ripped a ground-rule double, Moore brought home a run with a groundout, followed by a sacrifice fly from Meghan Fisher to make it 7-2.
  • Makayla Comer kept the inning alive with a single to right-center, and two pitches later, Tori Parente drilled a double into the left-center gap, scoring Comer from first and ending the game via the run rule.
Game Two: Adelphi 1, Pace 0

Highlights:

How It Happened:

  • The Panthers were slow to get going offensively, not recording their first hit until the fourth inning, when Wright broke up the no-hit bid.
  • Parente battled throughout the afternoon, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning to keep the Setters off the scoreboard.
  • Adelphi appeared poised to take the lead in the fourth after Wright singled. Klepper then followed with a base hit and Moore laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. However, the Panthers stranded both.
  • Parente worked around additional trouble in each of the final three innings, as Pace put two runners on base in every frame. Still, Parente and the Adelphi defense came through each time to preserve the scoreless tie.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Wagner sparked the offense again with a single right back at the pitcher. Comer then laid down a bunt, and the Setters' first baseman fielded it and threw wildly, giving Adelphi runners on first and third with nobody out.
  • After Comer attempted to steal second, Pace's throw down was cutoff and fired home, beating Wagner as she was tagged out trying to score.
  • With Comer now on second and two outs, McCarthy delivered the heroics, lining the second pitch she saw into left-center field to score Comer and give Adelphi the 1-0 walk-off victory, as the team celebrated near home plate.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 18, when they travel to Bentley University for another NE10 doubleheader beginning at noon.
