Softball Survives Late Comeback By Saint A's, Completes Series Sweep

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University softball team completed the series sweep over Saint Anselm University on Sunday afternoon, surviving a late comeback attempt by the Hawks in game two.

Series History:
  • Adelphi led the season series, 2-0.
  • Prior to today's doubleheader, the programs had faced off 34 times dating back to the 2009 season.
  • Adelphi (22-12, 18-2 NE10) was 19-14-1 all-time against the Hawks (16-18, 8-10 NE10) entering Sunday.
Game One: Adelphi 5, Saint Anselm 0

Highlights:
  • Jenna Plue continued her dominant stretch in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits. She earned her 10th win of the season and surpassed 100 strikeouts on the year.
  • Maddy Moore went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
  • Faith Wagner had two hits in two plate appearances, driving in a run and drawing a walk.
  • Tori Parente had a hit, an RBI and scored a run in two at-bats.
  • Makayla Comer tripled and scored a run.
How it Happened:
  • The Panthers plated two runs in the opening inning. Maddy Moore doubled down the left field line to score Emily Wolfe and Ellen Tarjan. Wolfe reached after being hit by a pitch, while Tarjan singled before Moore opened the scoring.
  • Adelphi extended its lead in the second inning, as Makayla Comer led off with a triple before Tori Parente lifted a sacrifice fly to bring her home.
  • As Plue continued to keep the Hawks' offense in check, the Brown and Gold added two more runs in the sixth. Moore started the rally with a single to center, before Amanda Chavarria moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Parente, Wagner and Wolfe then recorded three straight singles to extend the lead to 5-0.
  • Plue finished off her gem in the seventh, securing her second complete-game shutout victory of the weekend.
Game Two: Adelphi 5, Saint Anselm 4

Highlights:
  • Emma Priest went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the matinee.
  • Tarjan, Kaitlyn Klepper and Comer each doubled and drove in a run.
  • Lily Kenney threw a complete game, striking out six over 120 pitches.
How it Happened
  • The Hawks struck first in game two, tagging Kenney for a pair of runs in the opening inning, highlighted by two RBI doubles.
  • The Panthers responded immediately in the bottom half. Emma Priest led off with a single, and three straight doubles from Tarjan, Klepper and Comer helped Adelphi regain the lead.
  • After both pitchers settled in, the Brown and Gold offense added on in the fifth inning, chasing the Hawks' starter following a single by Wolfe and two Saint Anselm errors. After the pitching change, Adelphi scored its final run on a wild pitch that brought Tarjan home.
  • Saint Anselm answered in the sixth, stringing together three singles to cut the deficit to two.
  • The visitors continued to pressure Kenney in the seventh, recording a one-out double and a two-out single to trim the Panthers' lead to 5-4.
  • Kenney then bore down and struck out the Hawks' cleanup hitter to secure the series sweep.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 14, when they host Pace University. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
