Softball Comes Up Short in Doubleheader at Florida Tech

Melbourne, Fla. – The Adelphi University softball program dropped both games of its doubleheader against Florida Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.

Series History:
  • Prior to today's doubleheader, the two teams had faced off just twice.
  • The only previous matchup took place last season (3/4/25), with the Panthers falling in both games of the doubleheader.
Game One: Adelphi 7, Florida Tech 10 (F/8)

Highlights:
  • Ellen Tarjan went 2-for-3 with a home run, while knocking in two runs and scoring twice.
  • Makayla Comer was 1-for-4 with her first career homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Amanda Chavarria had two hits in four at-bats while driving in a run.
  • Emma Priest had two hits and scored twice in the leadoff spot.
  • Lily Kenney went the distance, pitching 7 1/3 innings.
How it Happened:
  • Florida Tech tagged Kenney for three runs in the bottom of the first via a long ball from Haley Rider. The Cats answered back, scratching across a run in the top of the second, with Comer hitting a ground ball to the right side to bring in Chavarria.
  • An inning later, Adelphi tied things up at three, with Priest scoring on a wild pitch and Chavarria roping a double to left field to bring in Tarjan.
  • After trading runs, the Panthers took a two-run lead in the top of the sixth. Faith Wagner knocked in her first career RBI before Tarjan doubled to bring Priest across.
  • Florida Tech tied things up in its final at-bat, stringing together a trio of singles to send the game into extra innings.
  • Comer then came up clutch for the Panthers, smacking the team's second home run of the game — and the first of her collegiate career — to give the squad a one-run advantage.
  • The opposition answered back, tying the game at seven before hitting a walk-off three-run homer to end an exciting back-and-forth battle.
Game Two: Adelphi 0, Florida Tech 6

Highlights:
  • Wagner went 2-for-2 in the game.
  • Reeghan McCarthy registered the team's only extra-base hit.
  • Chavarria had a hit in three at-bats, extending her hitting streak to three games.
  • Tori Parente dazzled in 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing just one run while striking out four.
How it Happened:
  • Florida Tech opened things up quickly, chasing Adelphi starter Jenna Plue out of the game in the second inning as the opposition's offense plated five runs, highlighted by a round-tripper from Miranda Schwartz.
  • Parente allowed the hosts to add a run to their lead in the bottom of the fourth before settling in the rest of the way.
  • The Cats' offense threatened to start a rally in the top of the fifth, with Wagner singling and McCarthy finding the left-center gap, but both runners were stranded.
  • Florida Tech then retired the next six Adelphi batters in order to hold on for the victory.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers continue their road trip in the Sunshine State on Monday, Mar. 9, as they visit the campus of Eckerd College for doubleheader action beginning at 4:00 p.m.
