Softball Rallies Late to Earn Split in Season-Opening Doubleheader

Lakeland, Fla. – The Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader to open the season on Friday afternoon, as the Panthers rallied from a four-run deficit in the seventh inning of game two to get into the win column.

Series History:

  • Prior to today's doubleheader, the two teams had met just four times, with Adelphi holding a 3–1 edge in the series.
  • In their most recent matchup last season (3/4/25), the teams split, with the Panthers falling in game one (3–2) before taking game two (12–2).
  • In last year's win, Reeghan McCarthy went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Game One: Adelphi 1, Florida Southern 3

Highlights:
  • Emma Priest hit leadoff in her first collegiate start and went 1-for-3 with a walk, notching her first career hit.
  • Ellen Tarjan started at the hot corner and drove in the offense's only run of the game.
  • Faith Wagner made the start in left field and went 1-for-2 in her first collegiate contest, marking a career milestone.
  • Lily Kenney pitched all six frames for the Panthers, needing just 60 pitches while scattering eight hits and three runs (two earned).
How it Happened:
  • Following two clean innings from both squads, Florida Southern got on the board first, tagging Kenney for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.
  • The Cats offense responded in the next frame, as Emily Wolfe got things started with an infield single. Soon after, Wolfe came around to score from first thanks to a loud double from Tarjan that beat the opposition's left fielder. The Panthers put runners on the corners with no outs but ultimately left two runners stranded.
  • Kenney worked her way out of trouble in the fourth and fifth innings, keeping the Panthers within one run, but the Mocs added an insurance run in the sixth.
  • Wagner lined a single into right field during the team's final at-bat, but the Cats offense was retired shortly after.
Game Two: Adelphi 7, Florida Southern 6

Highlights:
  • Kaitlyn Klepper enjoyed a four-for-four performance that featured two runs scored and two RBI, including the game-tying run in the seventh inning.
  • Makayla Comer delivered the game-winning RBI double in the seventh to cap off the comeback.
  • McCarthy started at second base in game two, going 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Jaylen Wright led off the order in her first collegiate start, tallying her first career hit and scoring a run in three at-bats.
  • Amanda Chavarria reached base twice via a hit and a walk while scoring a run in three plate appearances.
  • Jenna Plue started the game and returned later for the save, totaling four and two-thirds innings of work.
  • Tori Parente came on in relief of Plue during the bottom of the fourth, notching two and one-third innings while earning the win.
How it Happened:
  • Florida Southern cracked the box score first, bringing two runs across against Plue in the opening inning.
  • The Brown and Gold knotted things up in the top half of the second thanks to an error by the home team that allowed Chavarria and Klepper to score.
  • The Mocs offense continued to tack on runs, adding two more in the fourth with the help of three free passes from Adelphi's pitching staff.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the hosts strung together a pair of hits and a walk before taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch by the Panthers to extend their lead to four.
  • Following a trio of defensive changes from Florida Southern during the Panthers' final opportunity, Wright laced her first collegiate hit into left field to spark a rally. Tarjan then reached on an error by the Mocs defense, allowing Wright to move to third with one out. After Meghan Fisher walked to load the bases, McCarthy delivered an RBI single.
  • Florida Southern then made a pitching change, bringing Natalie Snowden back to face a red-hot Klepper, who was already 3-for-3 against the Mocs. Klepper notched her fourth hit of the game, sending a ball over the left fielder's head to bring McCarthy and Fisher home and tie the game.
  • On the very next pitch, Comer traded places with Klepper, mashing a ball over the left fielder's head to bring in the winning run for the Panthers as the dugout erupted.
  • Plue returned to the circle after pitching the first three and two-thirds innings. She allowed the hosts to load the bases before shutting the door to secure the Panthers' first win of the season.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers continue their road trip on Saturday, Mar. 7, as they visit Florida Tech for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
