Bullpen Leads Softball to Series Win Over Assumption

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University softball team defeated Assumption University twice on Sunday afternoon, led by a pitching staff that allowed just one run on the day.

Series History:

  • The teams split their most recent matchup on Saturday (3/28/26), as the Panthers dropped game one before bouncing back for a 3-0 win in game two.
  • Prior to Sunday's doubleheader, Adelphi (11-11, 7-1 NE10) had faced Assumption (8-15, 3-5 NE10) a total of 29 times since the 2009 season, with the Panthers holding a 21-8 edge in the series.
Game One: Adelphi 3, Assumption 0

Highlights:
  • Jenna Plue tallied her second straight complete-game shutout in as many days, striking out six batters and allowing just one hit.
  • Emma Priest went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in the win.
  • Emily Wolfe had a hit, an RBI and a run scored in two plate appearances.
  • Kaitlyn Klepper and Maddy Moore each drove in a run in 1-for-3 efforts.
How it Happened:
  • Adelphi opened the scoring in the first inning, as Priest led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wolfe and scored on a single by Klepper.
  • Two innings later, the Panthers extended their lead to 3-0. Priest once again led off the inning with a hit, then moved to second on a wild pitch. Wolfe worked a full count before lining a ball into right-center field to score Priest.
  • The Brown and Gold then put two more runners in scoring position following a Greyhounds defensive miscue. Moore followed with a ground ball to the left side that plated Wolfe.
  • Plue carried a no-hit bid into the top of the fifth inning, as she had everything working against the opposition in the win.
Game Two: Adelphi 2, Assumption 1

Highlights:
  • Faith Wagner went 2-for-2, including the game-winning RBI in the fourth inning.
  • Tori Parente threw a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run over seven innings.
  • Meghan Fisher had two hits in three at-bats while scoring a run.
  • Makayla Comer drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
How it Happened:
  • After three scoreless innings, all of the game's offense came in the fourth. Assumption grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top half, scoring its first run in 15 innings against the Adelphi pitching staff. The Greyhounds strung together a pair of hits, including a two-out RBI single by Molly green.
  • Adelphi answered immediately in the bottom of the inning. Klepper led off with a single through the left side, and Fisher followed with a double down the left field line on the second pitch she saw.
  • With both runners in scoring position, Comer got the job done, sending a deep fly ball to center field that allowed Klepper to tag-up and score, and Fisher to advance to third.
  • Wagner followed with the eventual game-winning hit, ripping a hot-shot into center field to bring Fisher home.
  • Parente worked around trouble in the fifth inning before retiring the final six Assumption hitters in order to secure the series victory.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 31, as they continue conference play with a trip to Pace University. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
