Softball Earns Split with Assumption Behind Plue's Complete-Game Shutout

Garden City, N.Y. – Adelphi University's softball team earned a split with Assumption University on Saturday afternoon, behind a complete-game shutout from Jenna Plue.

Series History:

  • Prior to today's doubleheader, the programs had faced off 27 times dating back to the 2009 season.
  • Adelphi (9-11, 4-1) was 20-7 all-time against the Greyhounds (8-13, 3-2), with the most recent matchup (5/2/25) ending in a 7-4 loss.

Game One: Adelphi 0, Assumption 7

Highlights:

How it Happened:

  • In a game controlled by Assumption from the start, the Greyhounds got on the board in the opening frame, taking advantage of an Adelphi error.
  • Two innings later, the opposition put together three straight hits, highlighted by a Maddy Bland double, to extend the host deficit to 3-0.
  • Assumption added another run in the fifth, as Bland singled, stole a base and came around to score two pitches later with the Greyhounds tacking on three more in the top of the sixth to make it a 7-0 game.
  • The final 14 batters of the game were retired in order for the Brown and Gold, as the offense was unable to mount a comeback.

Game Two: Adelphi 3, Assumption 0

Highlights:

  • Maddy Moore went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk in the start behind the plate.
  • Plue went all seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out six in her fourth win of the season.
  • Kate Meyer started at DP and drove in a pair of runs, recording a double and a walk during the matinee.
  • Kaitlyn Klepper had a hit and scored a run in three at-bats.

How it Happened:

  • Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth, when the Panthers did all of their damage in one inning with a three-spot.
  • After Tarjan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Klepper laid down a bunt and legged it out for a single. Two pitches later, Moore lined a single into left field to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead.
  • After Kayla Suleski entered as a pinch runner for Moore, both she and Klepper advanced a base on a passed ball by the Greyhounds catcher.
  • The freshman, Meyer, then worked the count full before driving a ball over the center fielder's head, bringing both runners home and extending the Panthers' lead to 3-0.
  • From there, it was all Plue, who worked around trouble in the final frame to secure the shutout and move Adelphi back into the win column.

Up Next:

  • The Panthers will continue their series with Assumption University on Sunday, March 29, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
