Garden City, N.Y. – In an ever so rare road series at William J.Bonomo Field for the Adelphi baseball team, the Panthers took on Saint Michael's for the first set of two doubleheaders on Saturday afternoon.
Series History:
Game One: Adelphi 13, Saint Michael's 5
Highlights:
- John Carver, the reigning Northeast 10 and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Week, continued his dominance on the mound. The right-hander struck out 14 batters in 6.0 innings of work, surpassing his former season high in strikeouts (41) in just five starts.
- Tommy Rizzuto had a career-high four hits in five at-bats. He scored two runs and drove in one.
- L.J. Bohne, Zach DeMilt, Bryan McCleary and Erick Duignan all had multi-RBI games.
- Anthony Rigogliosi went 2-for-4 as the Panthers' nine hitter and scored a team-high three runs.
How It Happened:
- Carver mowed down Saint Michael's in the first three innings, recording eight of the first nine outs via strikeout.
- After not being able to make much noise in the first two innings, Adelphi struck for five runs in the bottom of the third.
- The inning got started with a Rigogliosi hit by pitch and a DeMilt double. Bohne drove Rigogliosi in with an RBI groundout, then McCleary ripped a double to score DeMilt.
- With two outs and two runners on, Matt Ryan drove a ball into right field, where the swirling winds in Garden City helped the Adelphi designated hitter. The ball was dropped by the Saint Michael's right fielder, scoring McCleary and giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
- After an Evan Carway walk, Duignan added to the lead, putting the "road" team up 5-0 with an RBI double.
- Carver got through the inning with ease, and the Panthers added two more runs in the fourth.
- Two walks chased the Purple Knights' starter, and Adelphi capitalized with a Ryan RBI single and a run via a wild pitch to take a seven-run lead.
- With a seven-run cushion, Carver found himself in a bit of trouble in the bottom of the fourth.
- A walk, a hit by pitch and an infield single loaded the bases for Saint Michael's, with their first run coming on an RBI walk.
- After a visit from pitching coach Pat McCabe, the Panther ace settled down and struck out the next two batters to keep the lead at six.
- Adelphi scored six more runs off the Purple Knights' relievers in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, courtesy of RBIs from Bohne, McCleary and DeMilt.
- Leading 13-1 after the seventh, Joseph Tagliavia finished the final three innings, allowing four runs and striking out three to earn his first career save and secure the victory.
Game 2: Adelphi 13, Saint Michael's 2 (F/7)
Highlights:
- Dylan Beirne had the best start of his young career, earning the win with 6.0 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
- Tommy Rizzuto stayed hot with a 2-for-4 game, driving in two runs and scoring one.
- Michael Robinson was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with two walks, tying his career high with four RBIs.
- Seven Panthers had multi-hit games, four of them (Robinson, Rizzuto, Matt Ryan, Zach DeMilt) with multiple RBIs.
How It Happened:
- The Panthers got off to a roaring start, scoring seven runs before an out was even recorded.
- Chasing the Saint Michael's starter, Adelphi's runs came after two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Robinson. The designated hitter roped a single down the right field line to score two.
- Albert Ramos walked in the next at-bat to reload the bases for Ryan, who came through with two more runs for the Panthers.
- Rizzuto had the third two-RBI single of the frame, and the seventh run came on a wild pitch.
- Adelphi added its eighth run in the top of the third thanks to a DeMilt RBI single up the middle.
- In the bottom half of the inning, the Purple Knights threatened to get on the board. A single, a walk and an error loaded the bases, but Beirne worked out of trouble, forcing a pop out and a groundout to keep the Panther lead at eight.
- Robinson homered in the fourth, and the Cats added four more runs in the sixth.
- Ryan singled and Duignan reached on an error before Justin Wilkinson drove the Adelphi catcher in with a double to right.
- DeMilt and Bohne recorded RBI singles, and Robinson tallied another RBI with a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 13.
- After Beirne went six full innings, Jacob Lee pitched the seventh as the Panthers secured a 13-2 win.
