Softball Falls in Pair of Close Battles at Wilmington

Wilmington, Del. – Adelphi University's softball program dropped a pair of close contests to Wilmington University (Del.) on Wednesday afternoon, with each game decided by one run in the later innings.

Series History:
  • Prior to today's doubleheader, the programs had faced off 26 times since the 2010 season.
  • Adelphi (8-10) is 14-12 all-time against the Wildcats (6-16), with its most recent matchup (4/3/25) ending in a 7-2 loss.

Game One: Adelphi 5, Wilmington 6

Highlights:

  • Kaitlyn Klepper registered two extra-base hits, including her third homer of the year, while driving in two runs.
  • Lily Kenney came on in relief and worked four strong innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
  • Meghan Fisher started at DP and went one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.

How it Happened:

  • The Wildcats got off to a fast start against starter Tori Parente, tagging her for three runs in the first frame, highlighted by a triple and a home run.
  • In the bottom of the third, the hosts added two more runs, taking advantage of a Panthers' defensive error.
  • One inning later, Klepper gave the team a jolt, taking the first pitch she saw over the fence in left-center for a two-run shot.
  • The Panthers then put together a three-run rally in the top of the sixth to tie the game. After Klepper laced a double and Amanda Chavarria drew a walk, Fisher delivered a single into center field. The Wildcats' defense then suffered two throwing errors that allowed all three runners to score and even the game.
  • In the seventh inning, the opposition used small-ball tactics, including a sacrifice bunt followed by a walk-off squeeze play that the Panthers were unable to defend.

Game Two: Adelphi 4, Wimington 5

Highlights:

  • Freshmen Jaylen Wright and Emma Priest each went two-for-four with a run scored.
  • Fisher went deep for her second home run of the season in a two-RBI performance.
  • Ellen Tarjan had two hits in four at-bats while driving in a run.
  • Klepper added two hits to her day and scored once.

How it Happened:

  • Adelphi scored early in the top of the first. After Wright reached on a leadoff single and came home on a throwing error started by Priest's bunt single, Tarjan roped a single into left field to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
  • The Wildcats answered in the second to cut the deficit in half, thanks to an RBI double from Rylee Maloney.
  • In the following inning, Fisher got ahold of the first pitch she saw and sent it over the fence in left field, extending the lead to 4-1.
  • The hosts responded again, tying the game in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases via two hit-by-pitches and a walk, Wilmington strung together three hits to even the score.
  • Both pitchers settled in, as neither offense was able to push across a run until the sixth inning, when the Wildcats used back-to-back doubles from Maddie Vollmar and Lane to take the lead.
  • The Panthers put the tying run on base in the top of the seventh following a Priest single, but were unable to bring her home.

Up Next:

  • The Panthers will return home to host Assumption University for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
