Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

#1 Men's Lacrosse Escapes Mercy, 11-8

Garden City, N.Y. - Trailing by one after the first quarter, the top-ranked Adelphi University men's lacrosse program used a five goal fourth to send Mercy University back over the bridge with an 11-8 loss on Wednesday evening.

Highlights:
  • Christian Tomei finished with 16 saves in the win, including 10 in the opening half alone.
  • Danny Fisenne and Michael Durnin both posted a team-leading four points with the former accounting for a pair of goals and assists, and the latter scoring four goals.
  • William Greaves went 12-21 at the faceoff X and collected five ground balls. Gavin Herzog scooped a team-best six in the victory.
  • Defensively, eight of Mercy's 15 turnovers were caused, with Carter Linkletter and James David leading the way with two each.
How It Happened:
  • Mercy put up the strongest first quarter of action that Adelphi has seen thus far this season. For a team that has not let up three first half goals in 2026, the Mavericks (5-4) netted three in the opening quarter against the Panthers. Even with the three goals allowed, Tomei collected six of his 16 saves in the opening frame.
  • Another first for the season was Adelphi trailing after the first 15 minutes of action. Down by one, Fisenne connected with Noah Gibson to kick off the second with the equalizer and then Fisenne found Durnin to make it 4-3 in favor of the home team.
  • One thing was for sure, Mercy was not going down without a fight. Despite being held scoreless in the second - with Tomei picking up another four saves - the Mavericks came out hot in the third, winning the faceoff and getting a quick score less than 15 seconds into the frame. After a Fisenne goal put Adelphi up one, Mercy came back for a pair of tallies to give them the lead with 4:23 remaining in the third.
  • The Panthers put a pair of shots on goal and peppered a few more shots off the mark before Fisenne grabbed his second of the game as the third was coming to a close, to even the score at six-all.
  • With 15 minutes and a tie game, Durnin struck first to set the tone for the final quarter of regulation. A successful clear made way for Mercy's Aidan Babnik to find the back of the cage but the ensuing two minutes were all Adelphi. Kyle Lewis got in on the scoring to put the Cats ahead for good, with Durnin adding an insurance goal to make it a two-goal margin with around eight minutes to go.
  • With 3:14 left on the board, the Mavericks scored their last of the contest, as the hosts added another pair under the two minute mark to seal the deal. Adelphi's 5-2 stretch over the last 15 minutes was crucial to securing the victory.
Hear from Coach Purdie:
  • "Finishing with that five-goal offensive spark was a solid way to close out the win. Christian [Tomei] stood tall in cage and earned another game ball. This was a true team effort all around that sets us up for another week of practice as we face SNHU on Sunday."
Up Next:
  • Adelphi travels to Southern New Hampshire on Sunday, March 29 for a 1:00 p.m. conference meeting.
