Baseball Powers Past Dominican in 18-10 Win

Garden City, N.Y. – Taking a quick break from Northeast 10 play, the Adelphi baseball team hosted Dominican (N.Y.) at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (8-9, 4-4 NE10) now moves to 19-8 against Dominican since March 2004. The last matchup between the regional foes was just two weeks ago on March 6 in Cary, N.C. The Panthers were victorious, 12-1, behind a strong start from John Carver and RBIs from seven different Cats.

Highlights:

How It Happened:

  • The Chargers got on the board first with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the first. Will Celentano settled down after that, retiring the next three batters in a row.
  • Eric Ressegger replaced Celentano with one out in the third, and Dominican was able to score the inherited runner with an RBI double. The freshman settled down and got out of the inning with a strikeout and a fielder's choice.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Adelphi made some noise with two outs. Zach DeMilt reached on an infield single, and in the next at-bat Bryan McCleary was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch then put runners on second and third for Albert Ramos. The Panther shortstop hit a ball to his Charger counterpart, who made a bad throw past the first baseman. DeMilt scored easily while McCleary hustled around the bases to tie the game, 2-2.
  • Dominican responded in the top of the fourth, stringing together two hits and two walks to go up 4-2 and knock Ressegger out of the game. Joseph Tagliavia allowed an RBI single to his first batter faced but limited the damage to one run.
  • Trailing 5-2, the Panthers tried to make some noise in the bottom of the fifth. L.J. Bohne started the inning with a single up the middle before DeMilt was plunked. McCleary then laid down a perfect bunt single to the third baseman to set the table for Ramos.
  • On the second pitch of the at-bat, Ramos drove a single through the left side to make the score 5-4.
  • After a pitching change, a double steal put runners in scoring position for Evan Carway. The Adelphi first baseman did his job with an RBI groundout to the second baseman, tying the game at five.
  • Pinch-hitting in the six spot, Michael Robinson smoked a ball right at the Dominican first baseman, who fired home instead of taking the out at first. Hustling down the line, Ramos scored with a perfect slide, putting Adelphi up 6-5.
  • Two singles and two errors on the basepaths by Adelphi led to a Charger run, and after the top half of the sixth, the game was tied at six apiece.
  • The seventh inning saw another offensive outburst from the Panthers. A perfectly placed bunt single from Anthony Rigogliosi started Adelphi off, followed by a Bohne walk and another DeMilt hit by pitch. Bryan McCleary drew an RBI walk before a wild pitch scored Bohne.
  • Evan Carway recorded an RBI sac fly, and Tommy Rizzuto drove in his first runs of the season to help Adelphi take an 11-6 lead into the inning.
  • Cam LeTourneau threw a scoreless inning, and the Panthers tacked on four more runs. Bohne reached on an error to start it off, and DeMilt ripped a single to left field. After a McCleary walk, Ramos drove in two more runs with an RBI single.
  • With two outs in the inning, Rizzuto added two more runs, and Adelphi led 15-6 heading into the eighth.
  • A nine-run lead was quickly cut to six as Dominican's leadoff man, Erick Diaz, homered for the second time.
  • After the home run, the Chargers put together a string of four straight hits to add another run. Angelo Nunes avoided further trouble, and the Brown and Gold still led by five.
  • The bottom of the eighth saw three more runs come across for Adelphi, courtesy of a wild pitch and a Justin Wilkinson RBI single.
  • The game ended after the eighth inning due to darkness, and the Panthers earned an 18-10 win.
