Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University softball team defeated American International College twice more on Sunday afternoon to complete the Northeast 10 Conference opening series sweep.
Series History:
- The Panthers move to 50-8 all-time against the Yellowjackets, dating back to the 2002 season.
- Adelphi has now extended its winning streak to 35 games in a row against AIC.
- In this season's four-game series, the Cats' pitching staff allowed just two runs while scoring 13.
Game One: Adelphi 4, American Int'l 1
Highlights:
- Emma Priest went 2-for-4, blasting the first home run of her career while scoring twice.
- Lily Kenney went six strong innings, allowing just one run and striking out six to earn her third win of the season.
- Tori Parente tallied two hits in three at-bats.
- Ellen Tarjan recorded a hit, a run and an RBI in three plate appearances.
- Amanda Chavarria knocked in a run in a 1-for-3 performance.
How it Happened:
- Much like the first two games of the series, strong pitching kept both teams scoreless until the bottom of the third inning.
- In the third, Tarjan ripped a single into center field, bringing Priest home after she doubled two batters earlier to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. After Kaitlyn Klepper drew a walk, Chavarria drove Tarjan in from second with a base hit to left field, extending the lead to 2-0.
- In the next frame, Faith Wagner reached safely due to an AIC defensive mishap. Two batters later, Priest blasted the first home run of her young career over the left-field wall, bringing Ficke Field to life and giving the Cats a four-run cushion.
- Kenney continued to dominate, holding the Yellowjackets scoreless until the top of the seventh when AIC strung together three hits to break up the shutout. Kenney quickly limited the damage as the Panthers secured game one.
Game Two: Adelphi 6, American Int'l 0
Highlights:
- Maddy Moore went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
- Jenna Plue pitched a gem, allowing just two hits in a complete-game shutout effort while striking out seven.
- Tarjan tallied two more hits in three at-bats while scoring twice.
- Jaylen Wright notched two hits in four plate appearances and scored a run out of the leadoff spot.
- Meghan Fisher smashed her first home run of the season and scored in three at-bats.
How it Happened:
- The Brown and Gold offense got off to a quick start, putting up three runs in the first inning. Wright led off with a double, and Priest dropped a perfect bunt to give the Panthers runners on the corners. Priest then swiped second, allowing Wright to score on the throw.
- Two pitches later, Tarjan roped a single into left field, moving Priest to third. Priest later scored on a wild pitch, and Moore added to the lead with a ground ball to the right side, making it 3-0 Panthers.
- Plue was dominant in the circle, allowing just two hits through the first three innings and only one additional baserunner via walk the rest of the game.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Fisher launched a 0-2 pitch deep to center field to extend the lead to 4-0. After a pitching change in the fifth, Adelphi added insurance as Moore drove in Tarjan and Klepper with a single to right field.
- Plue shut the door the rest of the way to secure the series sweep.
Up Next:
- The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, March 25, traveling to the University of Wilmington (Del.) for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
