Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi baseball team wrapped up its four-game set with Assumption on Sunday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with the Greyhounds for the second day in a row.
Series History:
Game 1: Adelphi 8, Assumption 5 (F/7)
Highlights:
- Ari Gluck had the best start of his young career, earning his first collegiate win with a stat line of 4.0 innings pitched, five strikeouts, and two earned runs.
- Michael Robinson had a big game as Adelphi's designated hitter, going 3-for-4 with a bases-clearing double in the second inning.
- Albert Ramos went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
- Johnny Catuosco and L.J. Bohne each drew RBI walks.
How It Happened:
- Gluck had a clean first two innings of work, not allowing a baserunner.
- The Panthers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. Evan Carway got the party started with a double after miscommunication between Assumption's infield allowed a popup to drop on the pitcher's mound.
- Erick Duignan then beat out an infield single, and a Zach DeMilt hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Bohne and Catuosco both walked, scoring two for the Panthers before Robinson extended the lead to five with his three-RBI double.
- After a Bryan McCleary single, Ramos drove in two more to cap off the seven-run inning.
- The Greyhounds got one back in both the third and fourth innings to cut the lead to five.
- Both offenses were quiet until the bottom of the sixth, when Adelphi added an insurance run on a Ramos sacrifice fly.
- Taking an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, things got dicey for the Panthers as Assumption scored three runs and brought the tying run to the plate.
- With the bases loaded, Michael Tufo escaped the jam to earn his third save of the year and secure an 8-5 Adelphi win.
Game 2: Assumption 10, Adelphi 5
Highlights:
How It Happened:
- Kind held Assumption scoreless in the first two innings, which allowed the Panthers to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
- Ryan started the inning with a one-out walk and was driven in on a Carway triple. Duignan singled in the next Panther at-bat to score Carway.
- Assumption got one back in an inning that saw four Greyhounds walk, but Kind was able to escape trouble.
- Adelphi added another run in the third after a Ryan RBI single and went up 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a McCleary solo shot.
- The three-run lead did not last long, however, as the Greyhounds dinked and dunked their way around the bases. Five singles led to three runs and a tied 4-4 game.
- Adelphi regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Anthony Rigogliosi had a leadoff single and moved to third after a sacrifice from DeMilt and a wild pitch.
- McCleary hit a dribbler that the Assumption catcher misplayed, giving Adelphi a 5-4 lead.
- Once again, the Greyhounds responded in a chaotic top of the eighth.
- A leadoff single was followed by a throwing error that put runners on the corners for Assumption with nobody out.
- The Greyhounds attempted a successful safety squeeze, and while the call may have been questionable, the game was tied.
- Amid all the chaos, Will Panza – who laid down the bunt – was called out due to coach's interference. Now with one out and only one runner on, Michael Caron homered on the first pitch he saw to give the road team a 7-5 edge.
- In the ninth, Assumption scored three more to go up five. The Panthers tried to rally around a Rigogliosi leadoff single, but the offense could not get going as Adelphi fell in game two.
