Garden City, N.Y. – Adelphi University's softball program registered two wins against American International College on Saturday afternoon, powered by late-game heroics from the Panthers' offense.
Makayla Comer and
Emily Wolfe each delivered walk-off hits to keep the 33-game win streak against the Yellow Jackets alive.
Series History:
- Prior to today's doubleheader, the two programs had faced off 54 times dating back to the 2002 season.
- In their most recent matchup (4/9/25), Adelphi won 4-3.
Game one: Adelphi 1, American Int'l 0
Highlights:
- Comer went 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh.
- Lily Kenney tossed a complete game, striking out eight to tie a career high while allowing just one run.
- Amanda Chavarria recorded a hit in three plate appearances, including a clutch two-out double in the seventh.
How it Happened:
- In a low-scoring affair, both teams' starters shined early, as Kenney struck out four of the first six batters she faced.
- Kenney carried a no-hit bid into the fourth inning, when Isabel Kahli Robinson beat out a ball down the third-base line for AIC's first hit.
- The Yellow Jackets threatened in the fifth, as Morgan Bemont reached following a defensive mishap, but Kenney escaped the jam with a strikeout and a popup.
- Neither offense broke through until the final inning, when Chavarria laced a clutch two-out double to left field. Kayla Suleski entered as a pinch runner and advanced to third on a passed ball.
- Comer then delivered the game-winner, shooting a single up the middle as the Panthers celebrated along the first-base line.
Game Two: Adelphi 2, American Int'l 1
Highlights:
- Wolfe went 1-for-2 with the game-winning RBI and a run scored.
- Tori Parente threw a complete game, allowing one run while striking out three.
- Ellen Tarjan recorded a hit and an RBI in three at-bats.
- Reeghan McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
How it Happened:
- The Panthers opened the scoring after Wolfe singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Yellow Jackets' third baseman. On the next pitch, Tarjan ripped an RBI single to left field to give Adelphi an early lead.
- Both starters settled into another pitching duel, as both offenses were held scoreless over the next five innings.
- In the seventh, AIC tied the game after capitalizing on a rare walk issued by Parente. The Yellow Jackets moved the runner over before Brooklyn Cividanes singled to even the score at 1-1.
- The Panthers responded in the bottom of the eighth. McCarthy smashed a double off the top of the left-field fence, just missing a walk-off home run. Emma Priest followed with a perfectly placed bunt single, advancing McCarthy to third.
- Wolfe then lifted a fly ball to left field, deep enough for McCarthy to tag and score the winning run, as Adelphi celebrated once again in front of their dugout.
