Carver Strikes Out Career-High 15; Baseball Splits Twin Billing WIth Assumption

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi baseball team began its four-game weekend set with Assumption on Saturday afternoon at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. John Carver was electric in game one, striking out 15 batters en route to a 5-1 win. Assumption got the better of the Panthers in game two as the squads split the doubleheader.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (6-8, 3-3 NE10) now moves to 21-5 against Assumption since May 2009. Before today's doubleheader the most recent matchup was a doubleheader sweep by the Panthers on March 22, 2005.

Game 1: Adelphi 5, Assumption 1

Highlights:

  • John Carver took the bump for Adelphi and was phenomenal. The fifth-year right-hander struck out a career-high 15 batters in eight innings, earning his second victory of the season.
  • Johnny Catuosco stayed hot, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Evan Carway earned the start at first base and had a 3-for-4 day, driving in a run.
  • Michael Robinson drove in two as the Panther cleanup hitter, and Bryan McCleary recorded an RBI walk.

How It Happened:

  • Pitching was the name of the game early, as neither team could score through four and a half innings.
  • With Carver mowing down Assumption's lineup, the Panthers finally came through for their ace in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Anthony Rigoglisio got the inning started with a single to right field and was followed by an L.J. Bohne walk and a Catuosco bunt single.
  • Robinson got the first run of the game on the board with an RBI walk, and with two outs, Carway delivered a two-RBI single.
  • The Greyhounds got on the board in the top of the sixth with a solo home run, which would be the only run Carver allowed.
  • Adelphi jumped on the Greyhounds' reliever in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Erick Duignan reached first after being hit by a pitch, and two two-out doubles from Catuosco and Robinson made the score 5-1 Adelphi.
  • Assumption could not touch Carver in the seventh and eighth innings, managing only one baserunner.
  • Colin Richardson closed it out for the Panthers as they took game one.

Game 2: Assumption 14, Adelphi 3 (F/7)

Highlights:

  • Matt Ryan drove in all three runs for Adelphi on a three-RBI double that initially looked to be a home run, but the umpires ruled the ball hit the fence rather than the foul pole.
  • Johnny Catuosco was again 2-for-4, scoring one run.
  • Will Celentano pitched two scoreless innings in relief, recording his first career strikeout.

How It Happened:

  • Assumption was able to get to starter Dylan Beirne early, tagging the freshman for two runs in the top of the first inning.
  • Adelphi's bats were quiet as the Greyhounds extended their lead to 6-0 after a one-run second and three-run third.
  • Ryan's double in the bottom of the third cut Assumption's lead in half, but in the top of the fourth, the game got away from the Panthers.
  • Two errors in the inning led to six unearned runs charged to Joseph Tagliavia. The Greyhounds scored on an RBI double, a hit-by-pitch, and a grand slam to go up 12-3.
  • Assumption added two more in the top of the fifth to go up 14-3, and although Celentano shut down the visitors in the sixth and seventh, Adelphi fell by that score.

Up Next:

  • The Adelphi baseball team will be back at William J. Bonomo Field tomorrow at 12 p.m. for another two-game set with Assumption
