Saint Anselm Takes Game One; Baseball Explodes for 16 Runs in Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi baseball team finished its four-game set with Saint Anselm on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks got the better of the Panthers in game one, but an offensive outburst in game two by Adelphi allowed the Panthers to split the doubleheader.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (5-7, 2-2 NE10) now moves to 15-10 against Saint Anselm since March 2009. The four-game split puts both teams at 5-7 (2-2 NE10) in the standings.

Game 1: Saint Anselm 5, Adelphi 4 (F/7)

Highlights:

  • Dylan Beirne was very solid in his third start of the season. The freshman went a career-high six innings, allowing three runs and striking out three.
  • Johnny Catuosco, for the second straight day, was a force in the Panther lineup. The graduate student was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
  • Bryan McCleary and Albert Ramos each drove in a run.
  • Zach DeMilt and Anthony Rigogliosi continued to produce at the bottom of the lineup, each scoring once.

How It Happened:

  • The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the first courtesy of an Albert Ramos RBI single, his first of the year.
  • Saint Anselm got to Beirne in the next half inning, striking for two runs with two outs.
  • Adelphi regained the lead in the bottom of the second with a trio of walks setting the table for Catuosco. The left fielder drove in Duignan and Rigogliosi with a single up the middle to put the Panthers up 3-2.
  • The Saint Anselm bullpen settled down, not allowing another Adelphi run until the sixth inning.
  • Solid pitching put confidence into the Saint Anselm lineup as it tied the game in the top of the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, McCleary came through for Adelphi to put the home team back on top, 4-3.
  • Unfortunately for the Panthers, their bullpen woes continued and after Beirne left the game, Saint Anselm once again scored with two outs. A single and a double plated two runs for the Hawks and Adelphi was silenced for the final three outs.

Game 2: Adelphi 16, Saint Anselm 6 (F/7)

Highlights:

  • Relieving Ari Gluck in the fourth inning, Tyler Bonsignore earned his first win of the season. The left-hander tossed 2.2 innings and allowed no earned runs.
  • A 16-run frenzy for Adelphi featured seven Panthers with hits and four with multi-hit games.
  • Michael Robinson was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored as the Panther designated hitter.
  • Ramos put together one of his best games at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBI.
  • DeMilt knocked in four runs and scored once.

How It Happened:

  • Once again, Saint Anselm was first on the board, getting to Gluck for two runs in the top of the first.
  • Adelphi responded with three of its own to take the lead in the bottom half. L.J. Bohne started it off with a walk, followed by a Catuosco single and McCleary being hit by a pitch, then a Ramos RBI single and a Matt Ryan sacrifice fly.
  • The Hawks tied it in the third, but a Ramos sacrifice fly put Adelphi back up 4-3.
  • The bottom of the fifth was when Adelphi ran away with the game. After a DeMilt RBI groundout in the fourth, the Panthers struck for five runs. The big inning was built on small ball, with a majority of the runs coming from singles and walks. Ramos, Rigogliosi and Robinson all collected RBIs.
  • DeMilt's two-RBI single in the sixth extended the lead to 13-3.
  • Saint Anselm looked to stay in the game after scoring three in the top of the seventh, but Panther small ball struck once again. A double, two singles and two walks brought three runs home to give Adelphi a 16-6 win in seven innings.

Up Next:

  • The Adelphi baseball team will be back on William J. Bonomo Field Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. for a game with the College of Staten Island.
