Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Azemar Nets Career High, Women's Basketball Stopped by Assumption, 51-48

Garden City, N.Y. - After staging a triumphant comeback, the Adelphi University women's basketball team fell short on Wednesday evening, dropping a 51-48 decision to Assumption.

Series History:
  • This is the second meeting this season between the two teams, after falling in early January to the Greyhounds on their home court. All time, they have met 27 times since the 2002-03 season and Assumption holds a 8-19 record against the Cats.
  • With the loss, Adelphi has now lost the last eight matchups.
Highlights:
  • Kirina Azemar came off the bench to score 14 points, which finished second on the team behind Victoria Morales'  team-leading 18.
  • Morales also added a trio of steals, nine rebounds and had two blocks, to go alongside her perfect night at the charity stripe.
  • Adout Ring put together her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, posting a 5-for-7 performance from the floor. She added three steals.
  • Lauren Beberman continued to be a menace to Assumption's offense, grabbing three blocks, four steals and pulling down four boards.
How it Happened:
  • A terribly slow start for the home team offense saw the Panthers trailing by 15 after the opening 10 minutes of action. Adelphi went 2-for-11 from the floor while Assumption was shooting 53 percent from the field to collect 19 points.
  • The Greyhounds commanded the glass in the opening quarter as well, outrebounding the hosts 11-5.
  • Assumption managed to stretch to their largest lead of 17 about a minute into the second quarter, but momentum shifted in favor of the home team. Adelphi put together a 17-7 run over the frame which saw them 7-for-18 from the floor with two knockdowns from three-point range. Kirina Azemar was the spark that provided a team-leading seven during that stretch.
  • Back-to-back three pointers courtesy of Morales cut the deficit to five, but four alternating possessions all resulted in three pointers to keep the Greyhounds with an eight-point advantage at the break.
  • The third quarter went by even as both teams poured in 14 points with Adelphi managing to score at a 45 percent clip compared to Assumption's 30 percent performance from the floor.
  • Christina Sanchez knocked down a pair of free throws that brought her team within two with under two minutes left in regulation. After being fouled on a three-point attempt, Morales went on to sink all three ofher attempts to make it a one point game with 31 seconds to go.
  • Needing a late foul, the Cats sent Emily Collins to the line - where she made both - and unfortunately could not execute the final play to tie or even knock down the gamewinner.
