Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Hoops Erases 15-Point Deficit in 75-66 Win Over SCSU

Garden City, N.Y. – Trailing by as many as 15 in the first half, the Adelphi University men's basketball team mounted an impressive comeback to take down Southern Connecticut State University 75-66 on Wednesday night. Four Panthers scored double figures with the team shooting a combined 58.3% from the floor.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (19-9, 9-7 NE10) moves to 13-20 against the Owls since 2009 and 2-1 against them on the season. The last matchup between the two was a 71-57 SCSU win in New Haven on January 21. Mason Jackson — who missed tonight's game due to injury — led the Panthers with 19 points.

Highlights:

  • Al-Fatir Connor was back in form, serving as the team's leading scorer with 21 points. The senior shot 9-for-14 from the field and 3-for-5 from three. It was the fourth straight game Connor tallied double digits and his sixth 20+ point game of the season.
  • Dayshaun Walton was next with 16 points. He was the team's leader in assists with six helpers.
  • Jarnel Rancy led the team in rebounds and blocks, grabbing eight boards and swatting four shots.
  • Matthew Price, who earned the start in Jackson's absence, was excellent in the backcourt. He scored 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting (3-for-6 from three) while adding three assists and two rebounds.
  • Reece Brown was a spark off the bench, scoring eight and knocking down some clutch shots..

How It Happened:

  • A slow start for the Panthers led to Southern Connecticut State jumping out to a 15-point lead just after the 12-minute media timeout.
  • A barrage of three-pointers from Connor, Walton, Brown and Price saw the lead dwindle to seven with over five minutes to play.
  • The game went back and forth in the final minutes of the first half, and Adelphi had a big momentum swing when Connor knocked down a shot at the buzzer to put the Panthers down only six heading into the break.
  • Adelphi dominated the early going of the second half, taking the lead right before the first media timeout of the period.
  • Southern Connecticut State regained the lead, but the see-saw affair continued with the score tied at 44 and 46.
  • Clutch defense, costly missed free throws and shots from Connor and Patrick Burke put the Brown and Gold up five with 11 to play.
  • From that point on, Adelphi never lost the lead and led by as many as 12 late in the half.
  • The Owls tried to get back into the game, but their shots were not falling while the Panthers dominated inside.
  • Adelphi got to the line late and ultimately earned a 75-66 victory.
  • The Panthers shot 64% in the second half compared to the Owls' 29% and outscored SCSU in the paint, 34-28.

Up Next:

  • The Panthers will stay home this week when they welcome Bentley University to Garden City. Being honored before the game for senior day will be Connor, Walton, Jackson, Price and Rancy. Tip from the Center for Recreation and Sport is set for 3:30 p.m.
