Men's Basketball's Comeback Thwarted at Southern New Hampshire in 70-62 Loss

Manchester, N.H. – The Adelphi men's basketball team fell to Southern Hampshire after an attempt at a late comeback, 72-60. Two separate 10-0 runs helped put the Penmen over the top.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (16-9, 8-7 NE10) moves to 11-10 against the Penmen since the 2009-10 season. The last matchup between the pair was a 63-59 Panther win at the Center for Recreation and Sport on January 17. Dayshaun Walton, Patrick Burke and Mason Jackson were the team's high scorers with Walton potting 17 while Burke and Jackson scored 13.

Highlights:

  • Walton was the team's leading scorer and rebounder with 16 and eight. He shot 3-5 from three-point land.
  • Jackson was second on the team in scoring with 14. He shot 5-8 from the floor, 4-7 from three and was tied with Jarnel Rancy for the team lead in blocks with two.
  • Rancy was the team's assist leader with four and brought down seven boards

How It Happened:

  • The Panthers once again started slow, but solid defense and three-pointers from Mason Jackson and Matthew Price saw the score at 8–6 Penmen less than five minutes in.
  • An 8–3 run after buckets from Walton, Burke, and Rancy put the Panthers up 14–11 at the first media timeout.
  • The game went back and forth for the next few minutes, but with the score tied at 29, SNHU ripped off a 10–0 run to take a commanding lead.
  • Adelphi made a couple of shots to try to cut the deficit, but the Penmen's offense was hot as the home team took a 40–24 lead into the locker room.
  • Southern New Hampshire retained its double-digit lead for much of the early going of the second half, but the Panthers clawed their way back into the ballgame.
  • Makes from Rancy, Burke, Walton, and Connor had Adelphi trailing by only four, and a quick Zakari McQueen bucket cut SNHU's lead to two with 10 minutes to play.
  • The seesaw battle continued with the Penmen leading by as many as seven and as few as one, but Adelphi could not get the score even.
  • At the six-minute mark, Southern New Hampshire started another 10–0 run to put them up by as many as 11.
  • The Panthers tried once again to get back into the game, but there was not enough time left on the clock as they fell, 70-62.

Up Next:

  • The Panthers will return home on Wednesday night when they welcome Southern Connecticut State for the third game of the year between the two teams.. Tip from the Center for Recreation and Sport is set for 7:30 p.m.

Hear From Coach Duke:

  • "SNHU is always tough place to play. I was proud of the guys for fighting back after going down 16 points in the first half. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get over the top."
