Women's Basketball Earns Commanding Victory Over Pace, 69-45

Pleasantville, N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team earned a commanding road victory over Pace University on Tuesday evening, defeating the Setters by a final score of 69–45. The Panthers had three scorers reach double figures in the win.

Series History:

  • The two programs have faced off 40 times dating back to the 2002 season.
  • With the victory, Adelphi moves closer to .500 in the all-time series, now owning 18 wins in the 40 meetings.
  • In the two matchups this season, the Panthers went 1–1 against Pace, holding the Setters to an average of just 54.5 points per game.

Highlights:

  • Kirina Azemar continued her hot stretch of play, leading the team with 17 points in 32 minutes of action.
  • Gamila Betton pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while adding eight points.
  • Me'Challe Cancer made her presence felt with 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and a block.
  • Madison Williams joined Azemar and Cancer in double figures, scoring 12 points in 22 minutes.
  • Lauren Beberman and Christina Sanchez combined for 14 points in the win, recording three and two steals respectively, while both dished out three assists.

How it Happened:

  • After nearly four minutes of scoreless play to open the game, Beberman got Adelphi on the board, sparking a quick 4–0 run. Pace responded to take an 8–6 lead with 2:35 remaining in the first quarter. The Panthers then held the Setters scoreless for the remainder of the period, closing the frame with an 11–8 advantage behind four points from Williams.
  • Adelphi's offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring Pace 21–11. Azemar caught fire in the second, scoring 10 points, while the Brown and Gold shot a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. The offensive outburst saw the Panthers carry a 32–19 lead into halftime.
  • Out of the break, the Cats picked up right where they left off, outscoring Pace 22–13 in the third quarter. Cancer totaled six points in the period as Adelphi extended its lead to 22 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
  • The fourth quarter opened with a 7–0 Panther run, giving Adelphi its largest lead of the afternoon at 29 points. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch as the Panthers coasted to the 69–45 victory.
  • Alyssa Bell scored the first points of her collegiate career, knocking down a three-pointer with 38 seconds remaining. 
  • Adelphi outrebounded Pace 37–30, forced 18 turnovers, and converted those into 25 points. The Panthers also dominated the paint, outscoring the Setters 36–18, while the bench contributed 19 points compared to Pace's seven.
