Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team opened Northeast 10 Conference play in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon, extending its winning streak to six games with an 8-0 shutout of Saint Michael's College at Motamed Field. The Panthers (6-4, 1-0 NE10) scored six times in the opening half and received goals from seven different players en route to their third consecutive shutout.
Series History:
- With Saturday's victory, Adelphi improves to 17-2 all-time against Saint Michael's (2-7, 0-1 NE10), dating back to the first meeting in 2009.
- The Panthers have now won 14 consecutive matchups against the Purple Knights, with their last loss in the series coming on Sept. 9, 2012.
- Adelphi remains perfect at home against Saint Michael's, improving to 9-0 all-time in Garden City.
- The Brown and Gold have shut out Saint Michael's in each of the last four meetings, outscoring the Purple Knights 23-0 over that span.
Highlights:
- Izzy Leclair led the Adelphi offense with two goals, bringing her season total to five.
- Julia Smith, Jody Van Aardt, Mieke van Antwerpen, Lana Mignon De Wet, Parris Duenas and Olivia Docyk each found the back of the cage.
- Van Antwerpen and Docyk each recorded their first goal of the season, for van Antwerpen it marks the first of her collegiate career.
- Caroline Beakes finished with a game-high three assists, setting up all three of Adelphi's second-quarter goals.
- The Panthers dominated the shot count, 53-3, including a 28-1 advantage in shots on goal.
- Adelphi also held a 12-4 edge in penalty corners.
- Tayla Szmak and Allison Gregory combined for the shutout, with Szmak making the lone save required of the Adelphi goalkeepers.
How it Happened:
- After controlling possession throughout the opening minutes, Adelphi broke through just over nine minutes into the contest. Smith connected with Leclair for the opening tally, giving the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
- Smith went from facilitator to scorer just 45 seconds later, finding the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season to quickly double the Adelphi lead.
- Van Aardt capped off a three-goal opening quarter with just over three minutes remaining, scoring her fifth goal of the season to send the Brown and Gold into the second period ahead 3-0.
- The Panthers wasted little time adding to their advantage in the second quarter. Just 1:27 into the frame, Beakes connected with van Antwerpen for her first goal of the season anbd the first of her college career.
- Beakes continued to distribute later in the quarter, setting up De Wet with just over three minutes remaining in the half. The senior buried her team-leading 14th goal of the season to extend the lead to 5-0.
- Adelphi added one more before the break, as Beakes picked up her third assist of the quarter on Duenas' second goal of the season in the closing seconds of the half.
- Despite a scoreless third quarter, the Panthers continued to control the contest and carried their six-goal advantage into the final frame.
- Leclair struck for the second time with just over a minute remaining in regulation, scoring her fifth goal of the season to push the lead to seven.
- Docyk put the finishing touches on the conference-opening victory during a penalty corner with time expired, scoring off a feed from Gianna Ventura for her first goal of the season.
