Women’s Basketball Edged by Assumption in First Conference Loss of Season

Worcester, Mass. – In a rematch of last year's Northeast 10 Conference semifinal, the Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered a 61-57 loss to Assumption University on Wednesday night.

Series History:

  • The conference opponents have met 25 times since the 2002–03 season.
  • Adelphi is 8-17 in the series, having dropped the last six meetings against the Greyhounds.
  • The most recent matchup was a 54-48 loss in last year's NE10 semifinal.
Highlights:
  • Christina Sanchez and Madison Williams led Adelphi offensively with 12 points apiece. Sanchez added five steals on the night, while Williams shot an efficient 50% from the field and 40% from three-point range.
  • Victoria Morales finished with 11 points, seven assists, and three steals.
  • Gianna Chuffo chipped in 10 points in her first career start for the Panthers, shooting 4-for-11 from the field while knocking down two triples and recording a steal.
  • Gamila Betton led the team on the glass with nine rebounds to go along with five points.
  • Me'Challe Cancer added seven points, three rebounds, an assist, and a block.
How it Happened:
  • Assumption jumped out to an early 8–0 run before Williams drilled a three-pointer to get Adelphi on the board. The Panthers cut the deficit to one with 21 seconds remaining after Chuffo converted a layup, but Emma Dahl gave Assumption a three-point edge with a layup in the final seconds of the opening quarter.
  • The Brown and Gold entered halftime with a one-point lead after Chuffo knocked down back-to-back three-pointers in the final minute, capping off an 8–0 run. Adelphi scored 19 points in the second quarter while shooting 8-for-13 from the field (62%).
  • The third quarter featured a back-and-forth battle, with the Greyhounds holding a three-point lead entering the final frame. Betton, Morales, and Sanchez each hit timely baskets to keep the game close, but a clutch triple from Teagan Curran gave Assumption the edge late in the period.
  • In the final quarter, Assumption went on a 5–0 run to take a seven-point lead with 6:01 remaining. Adelphi responded, as Williams converted a layup to cut the deficit to three with 1:18 left.
  • After Assumption knocked down three straight free throws, Williams hit a triple with seven seconds remaining to make it a one-possession game. However, the Greyhounds sealed the win with one final free throw as time expired.
  • The loss marks Adelphi's first conference setback of the 2025–26 season.
Hear from Coach Jackson:
  • "I give a lot of credit to Assumption and what they did defensively. We turned the ball over more times than we would have liked. Defensively, we had a couple of crucial mistakes in big moments, but there are a lot of things we can take away from tonight and get better at before our next game."
Up next:
  • The Panthers travel to Colchester, Vermont, to face Saint Michael's College on Saturday, Jan. 10, with tip-off scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
