Second-Half Comeback Falls Short as Women’s Hoops Lose to Saint Michael’s, 52–40

Colchester, Vt. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Saint Michael's College, 52–40, despite a strong second-half comeback on Saturday afternoon.

Series History:

  • The two programs have faced off 17 times since the 2009–10 season.
  • Adelphi currently leads the all-time series, 10–7.
  • In the most recent matchup on Feb. 10, 2025, the Panthers defeated the Purple Knights, 65–37.
Highlights:
  • Kirina Azemar led Adelphi in scoring with nine points in 23 minutes of action.
  • Me'Challe Cancer pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with five points and three steals in a game-high 38 minutes.
  • Christina Sanchez finished with seven points and seven steals.
  • Victoria Morales added eight points, five steals, five rebounds, and two assists.
How it Happened:
  • Adelphi jumped out to an early 5–2 lead, but Saint Michael's responded with a 15–2 run to take a 10-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, highlighted by seven points from Jayla Tyler.
  • The Purple Knights extended their lead to 21 points by halftime, outscoring the Panthers 19–8 in the second quarter. Knocking down five three-pointers and shooting 44 percent from the field for the half.
  • The Brown and Gold turned the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Saint Michael's 15–6. Azemar and Sanchez combined for nine of Adelphi's 15 points in the frame.
  • The final quarter featured a back-and-forth battle, as Adelphi chipped away at the deficit. Back-to-back three-pointers from Morales and Gianna Chuffo early in the fourth cut the lead to five, but the Purple Knights responded to push the advantage back to 11. The teams traded baskets in the final two minutes, with the Panthers' comeback effort ultimately falling short.

Hear from Coach Jackson:
  • "Offensively, we didn't have it today, but I thought our defense was very solid in the second half," said Jackson. "Kirina (Azemar) came in and gave us a huge spark on both ends of the floor."

Up next:

  • The Panthers return home to Garden City for a two-game homestand beginning Tuesday, Jan. 13, when they welcome Pace University to the Center for Recreation and Sport. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
