Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Walton Scores 27 But Men's Hoops Falls to Saint Anselm

Garden City, N.Y. – The nationally ranked Adelphi men's basketball team returned home for a conference tilt against Saint Anselm on Sunday. Tied at halftime, a hot shooting stretch from the Hawks propelled them to a 86-79 victory, handing the Panthers their first conference loss.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (10-3) falls to 6-15 against Saint Anselm since the 2002-03 season. The last matchup between the two squads was a 87-72 Panther victory in Manchester. Tavin Pierre Philippe, Andres Fulgencio and Dayshaun Walton combined for 62 of the team's points in the win.

Highlights:

  • Dayshaun Walton scored a game-high 27 points, eclipsing his season high of 25 that he posted twice in wins over American International and Franklin Pierce. The senior was a huge part of Adelphi's second half scoring while he shot 8-14 from the floor and 4-6 from three for the game. Walton was also the team's leading rebounder with eight boards.

  • Mason Jackson had a nice scoring night, pouring in 18 shots on 7-11 shooting.

  • Patrick Burke was the only other Panther in double digits, scoring 12 points in 22 minutes of action.

  • Al-Fatir Connor was Adelphi's leading assist man with six. The guard also added seven points and three rebounds.

  • Reece Brown provided valuable minutes off of the bench and scored seven points, making three of his four attempted shots.

How It Happened:

  • The game got off to a blistering pace with both teams shooting above 50% in the first half. Adelphi shot 16-31 from the floor and 7-15 from three while the Hawks shot 18-31 and 3-8 from beyond the arc.

  • Saint Anselm led for 14:29 of the first half and jumped out to a lead as large as seven.

  • Jackson responded with a three pointer and after some solid defense as well as makes from Jackson, Burke and Zakari McQueen the game was tied at 29 with just over six minutes to play.

  • Adelphi took a short-lived lead at 35-34 before a back and forth ensued. A series of fast play and makes from both sides resulted in the game being tied at 39 at the break.

  • In the second half, the Panthers took an early four point lead after a Burke layup and pair of Walton free throws. The lead was short lived however, as an 8-0 Saint Anselm run put the Hawks back on top.

  • The away team's lead grew to as many as 11 with just under nine minutes to play but the Panthers continued to chip away. Walton took the game over and had Adelphi trailing by just four.

  • With five minutes left, a series of calls did not go Adelphi's way. While the Cats continued to fight, free throws from Saint Anselm got the better of them and the Hawks took home an 86-79 win.

  • Saint Anselm shot 23 free throws compared to Adelphi's 12 and held a 37-25 edge in rebounding.

  • Jarnel Rancy's presence was missed for the Panthers as they allowed a season-high 44 points in the paint and blocked only three shots as a team.

Up Next:

  • The Panthers will travel to Assumption and continue Northeast 10 play. Tip from Worcester, Mass is set for 7:30 P.M.
