Women's Hoops Suffer Setback at Saint Anselm, 52-42

Manchester, N.H. – Despite a one-point lead at the half, the Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Saint Anselm College by a final score of 52–42 on Saturday afternoon.

Series History:

  • The matchup marked the 23rd meeting between the two programs since the 2009–10 season.
  • Adelphi (10-8, 4-7) won the previous contest on Jan. 4 by a score of 53–51, as Victoria Morales and Madison Williams combined for 24 points.
  • The Panthers are now 2–9 all-time on the road against the Hawks (9-7, 4-7), compared to an 8–4 record at home.

Highlights:

  • Morales led all scorers and was the lone Panther in double figures, finishing with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field.
  • Despite being held scoreless, Lauren Beberman made her presence felt across the stat sheet, recording seven steals, seven rebounds, two blocks, and two assists in 31 minutes of action.
  • Christina Sanchez and Gamila Betton each added seven points for Adelphi.

How It Happened:

  • Saint Anselm jumped out to a fast start, opening the game on a 10–0 run. Adelphi broke through just under four minutes into the first quarter and closed the period within six following a three-pointer from Madison Williams and a pair of free throws by Morales.
  • The Panthers' offense came to life in the second quarter, scoring 19 points to the hosts' 12. Morales tallied seven in the frame, while Sanchez, Me'Challe Cancer, and Gianna Chuffo each knocked down three-pointers to give Adelphi a one-point lead at the break.
  • After trading baskets early in the third quarter, Saint Anselm responded with another 10–0 run to regain control. Morales answered with five straight points late in the period to keep the Panthers within striking distance, trailing by seven heading into the final quarter.
  • The Hawks extended their advantage to 14 behind back-to-back three-pointers from Anna Nelson. Despite continued back-and-forth scoring, Adelphi was unable to close the gap, as Saint Anselm maintained its double-digit lead down the stretch.

Hear from Coach Jackson:

  • "We didn't have it on the offensive end today. I thought our details and execution could've been sharper. Going into February, we have to be able to execute at a high level to pull games out."

Up Next:

  • The Panthers return home to the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday, Feb. 4, to host Assumption University at 5:30 p.m., looking to bounce back in a rematch of last year's Northeast 10 semifinal.
