Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jarnel Rancy Sets New All-Time DII Block Record, Men's Hoops Comes Up Short at Saint Anselm

Manchester, N.H. – The Adelphi men's basketball team played first-place Saint Anselm in a tightly contested game on Saturday afternoon, but the Panthers ultimately fell in overtime, 77-75.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (14-7, 6-5 NE10) falls to 6-16 against the Hawks since the 2009-10 season.
  • The last matchup between the pair was on January 4 at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
  • A 25-point effort from Will Davies put Saint Anselm over the top, 86-79.

Highlights:

  • Jarnel Rancy set the all-time Division II block record at 16:32 of the first half. The record was previously held by Bryan Grier who played at Wingate from 2005-08. Rancy finished the game with three blocks with the record now sitting at 457.
  • Patrick Burke had the best game of his career so far, tying his career-high in points with 26 and setting a new high in rebounds with 1
  • Dayshaun Walton and Al-Fatir Connor both added 15 points. Each led the team in assists with three.
  • Zakari McQueen scored six points off the bench, shooting 2-3 from beyond the arc.
  • Mason Jackson scored seven points and added eight rebounds. He now sits 19 points away from 1,000 for his career. Connor's 15 points put him 14 away from the milestone.

How It Happened:

  • In the first five minutes of the game, Adelphi jumped out to an early 11-4 lead with shots from Burke, Rancy and Jackson falling.
  • Down by as many as nine, Saint Anselm fought its way back and was able to tie the game at 18 with nine minutes remaining in the half.
  • A pair of McQueen three-pointers regained Adelphi the lead before a hot stretch of shooting put them back up by seven.
  • Two consecutive baskets cut the Panthers' lead down to two but a Burke layup right before the buzzer had Adelphi leading 39-35 going into the break.
  • In the early goings of the second half, the Brown and Gold held a steady lead that grew to six before the period's first media timeout.
  • The Hawks were able to tie the game up before Adelphi went on a 9-0 run for its biggest lead of the game. The contest continued to be a game of runs as Saint Anselm tied the game up with a 10-1 run itself, squaring the game at 53-all just under the 10-minute mark.
  • A back-and-forth battle ensued in the final minutes. A four-point Panther lead turned into a five-point Hawk lead with 3:11 left.
  • The Panthers were not fazed, however, as free throws from Walton along with big shots from Connor and Burke sent the game into overtime.
  • In the extra stanza, Adelphi jumped out to a four-point edge after layups from Walton and Connor. Unfortunately for the Cats, they were held scoreless for the final three minutes of OT and Saint Anselm capitalized, retaking the lead.
  • Connor had a chance to tie the ballgame in the dying seconds but after a ton of contact on his final shot, the ball could not find the net and Adelphi fell 77-75.
  • The Panthers were plagued by subpar shooting from three and the free throw line as they were only 6-23 from three-point land and 9-13 from the charity stripe.

Up Next:

  • The Panthers will return home on Wednesday night when they host Assumption. Tip from the Center for Recreation and Sport is set for 7:30 p.m.

Hear from Coach Duke:

  • "I thought the team gave a great effort for the entirety of the game. Unfortunately, we came out of the game a little bit short in a hard fought battle."
