Women’s Hoops Battles Back, Falls to SCSU, 65–51

New Haven, Conn. - Despite a strong third quarter, the Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Southern Connecticut State University, 65–51, on Wednesday afternoon.

Series History:

  • Since the 2009–10 season, the two programs have faced off 31 times.
  • Adelphi leads the all-time series, 18–13.
  • The Owls have won the last seven matchups, dating back to 2022.

Highlights:

  • Gianna Chuffo led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points, shooting 4-of-9 from three-point range and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. She also added a steal and an assist in the start.
  • Victoria Morales filled the stat sheet with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block in a team-high 38 minutes of action.
  • Gamila Betton grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds to go along with a pair of blocks in a strong effort.
  • Lauren Beberman was Adelphi's third-leading scorer with eight points, while dishing out four assists.
How itHhappened:
  • After a back-and-forth first quarter that saw Betton, Beberman, and Morales convert on field goals, the Owls went on a 9–0 run over the final 2:14 to take an 11-point lead after the opening 10 minutes.
  • Tish Blackwood began to heat up for Southern Connecticut, scoring seven of her 19 points in the second frame as SCSU extended its lead to as many as 17. Chuffo knocked down a three-pointer in the closing seconds to provide Adelphi momentum heading into halftime.
  • After the break, Morales gave the Panthers a spark, scoring eight points in the third quarter in a period that featured fast-paced offense on both ends. Adelphi outscored the Owls 24–18 in the frame and trimmed the deficit to eight points heading into the fourth.
  • Southern Connecticut responded with an 8–0 run to open the final quarter, but Chuffo answered with a 6–0 burst of her own to cut the deficit back to 10 with under five minutes remaining.
  • Both teams traded three-pointers down the stretch, including one from Me'Challe Cancer, but a pair of free throws from Jillian Martin and a basket from Blackwood helped the Owls seal the victory.

Hear from Coach Jackson:

  • "We got off to a slow start tonight, but I thought we played really hard. When you're playing a top team in the conference, you have to limit mistakes, or they'll make you pay every time. I'm proud of how we fought, and I think we're headed back in the right direction."

Up next:

  • The Panthers will continue their road trip on Saturday, Jan. 24, when they take on no. 21 Bentley University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
