New Haven, Conn. – The Adelphi men's basketball team had its three-game win streak snapped on Wednesday night after falling to Southern Connecticut State, 71-57, on the road. A slow start was the Panthers' undoing, as they fell behind by as many as 21 halfway through the first half. Although their shooting improved, they could not complete a comeback.
Series History:
-
Adelphi (13-5, 5-3 NE10) falls to 12-20 against SCSU since the 2009-10 season. The last matchup between the Panthers and the Owls was just two months ago in a non-conference tilt. Adelphi was victorious, 93-72, and Zakari McQueen scored 25 on 7-10 shooting from three-point land.
Highlights:
-
Mason Jackson was the team's leading scorer with 19 points. The senior shot 7-11 from the field and grabbed five boards.

Patrick Burke put together another solid night with 13 points and nine rebounds. He shot 4-5 from the floor and made all four of his free-throw attempts.
-
Matthew Price scored eight points, shooting 4-5 from the field and 2-3 from three.
-
Jarnel Rancy recorded three blocks, putting him just six away from the all-time Division II record.
How It Happened:
-
A slow start doomed the Panthers. In the opening 10 minutes of the game, Adelphi shot 0-9 from the field and scored its first four points on free throws from Walton and Burke.
-
That stretch saw Southern Connecticut State grow its lead to as many as 21, but the Panthers slowly chipped away at the deficit, ending the half on an extended 25-12 run.
-
The Owls made the first five shots of the second half, seeing their lead grow from six back up to 16 in just three and a half minutes.
-
Adelphi responded with a 9-1 run after buckets from Walton and Jackson to cut the lead down to eight with just under 14 minutes to play.
-
The Panthers battled down the stretch, but the ball just would not find the basket. Although they shot an improved 44% in the second half, going 1-9 from three affected the flow of the game.
From the halfway point of the second half on, SCSU's lead was never less than double digits as Adelphi fell, 71-57.
