Women's Soccer Scores Eight Goals in Dominating Win Over Caldwell

Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team returned to Motamed Field on Tuesday afternoon for some non-conference action against Caldwell.

The Panthers got off to a blazing start, recording six shots in the first fifteen minutes. Adelphi had a lot of early possession but a corner kick in the 20th minute was fruitful for the visitor. Caldwell's Melissa Pires scored an incredible Olimpico goal, giving the Cougars the lead straight from the corner.

Although trailing, Adelphi continues its attacking mentality. Less than two minutes later a beautiful back and forth between Kayleigh Goodrich and Madison Apicella led to an Apicella goal and a tie game.

The Panthers pushed forward with Caldwell having trouble clearing its zone. A crossing attempt from Crystal Knoell in the 32nd minute hit the hand of a Cougar, giving Goodrich a chance at the penalty spot. Calm, cool and collected, the reigning conference player buried the shot past the keeper for a 2–1 lead.

Just five minutes later, Knoell once again found herself in the center of the offense. A shot in from Julianna Violi deflected off of a Caldwell defender and found the freshman who potted her first career goal with a strike off of her left foot. The Cats were not done yet as in the 40th minute, Apicella swung a perfect cross into the box. Jenna Biondo lept above Caldwell's defense and headed in the first goal of her collegiate career to put Adelphi up 4-1 at the break.

While some teams may try to sit back on a three goal lead after a dominant half, that is not what the Panthers had in mind. They immediately went back to their attack minded offense, taking seven shots before finding their first goal of the half and fifth of the game when Goodrich fired an impressive goal off of a deflection for her eighth goal of the campaign, which halfway matches her total from last season.

Madison Howard got in on the fun in the 73rd minute, receiving the ball at midfield and sprinting past Caldwell's defense for the first goal of her young career.

Carmen Reinerink scored Adelphi's seventh goal on a flying header from a corner kick and Dylann Trahey ended the day in the 85th minute, cleaning up a loose ball on her original shot to give the Panthers an 8-1 victory.

Amanda Lora made her collegiate debut in the game with Dani Perguini making her season debut.

The Adelphi women's soccer team will return to the field on Saturday for a crucial NE10 contest against Bentley.
