Garden City, N.Y. – Led by Lana Mignon De Wet, the Adelphi University field hockey team earned a 2-0 victory over Mercy University on Tuesday afternoon, remaining undefeated in conference play.
The Panthers applied pressure on the visitors' goalie early in the first quarter, registering seven shots—four on target—as De Wet, Jena Geels, Kelly Johnson, and Katie Dettore all tested the opposition's keeper but came up empty. The Brown and Gold dominated the possession battle, controlling the ball for the majority of the first 15 minutes, while Mercy was unable to generate a single shot. Still, both teams remained scoreless through one quarter of play.
The second frame saw more offensive pressure from Adelphi, with the Panthers tallying 10 shots in the quarter. De Wet, Geels, and Izzy Leclair each challenged the Mavericks' goalkeeper. With just over two minutes left in the half, De Wet broke the seal. Her tenth goal of the season came from just inside the shooting circle, as she snuck a backhanded shot past the goalie while falling to the ground. De Wet's score stood as the lone goal of the half, sending Adelphi into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Out of the half, the Panthers' offense continued to control possession, recording 11 more shots in the third quarter compared to Mercy's two. After attempts by De Wet, Emily Souke, Sydney Rossacci, and Olivia Docyk, the Panthers' aggressive play earned them a penalty stroke. Northeast 10's leading scorer, De Wet, stepped up to the seven-yard hash mark and converted, extending the Brown and Gold's lead to two.
That would be the final offensive action for the Panthers, as starting goalkeeper Allison Gregory and the defensive unit weathered a late surge from the Mercy offense. Gregory stepped up with two crucial saves in the final frame to secure her second straight shutout and eliminate any chance of a comeback.
Head coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they welcome - the reigning NCAA Division II National Champions - Saint Anselm College to Motamed Field. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
