Field Hockey Takes Down No. 9 Saint Anselm, 1-0

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University field hockey team celebrated a major victory over no. 9 Saint Anselm College with a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

With the win over last year's NCAA Division II National Champions, the Panthers improved to 5-0 in conference play this season.

In a tightly contested matchup, it took just one early strike from Caroline Beakes in the first quarter to secure the win for the Panthers. The goal — her second of the season — came off a feed from Sydney Rossacci.

Positioned just inside the shooting circle on the right side, Beakes fired a low shot toward the cage that, with the help of a deflection off the stick of a Hawk defender, slipped past the goalkeeper. Adelphi generated two more penalty corners in the opening frame but was unable to capitalize.

In the second quarter, the Hawks ramped up the pressure, taking seven shots and earning five penalty corners. However, starting goalkeeper Allison Gregory came up big, making five saves in the period to keep the visitors off the board. Beakes and Lana Mignon De Wet each registered shots on goal in the second, but neither found the back of the net. The teams went into halftime with Adelphi holding a 1-0 lead.

Coming out of the break, the Panthers responded with pressure of their own. Kelly Johnson, Jena Geels, and De Wet each challenged the Hawks' goalkeeper, but were unable to extend the lead. Adelphi controlled possession throughout the third quarter, maintaining the narrow advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

In the closing quarter, the Adelphi defense stood tall as Saint Anselm pushed for an equalizer. Gregory, along with defenders Marta Alvarez Auguet, Olivia Docyk, Alexis Huntington, and Kattie Dettore, withstood a late surge — including a pair of penalty corners — to preserve the shutout.

For Gregory, it marks her third straight shutout on the season.

Head coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8, when they travel to face Southern Connecticut State University. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
