Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi men's soccer team welcomed Saint Michael's to Motamed Field on Saturday afternoon for a Northeast 10 tilt.
The visiting Purple Knights started the game off with a bang when Muntasir Ahmed scored a beauty off of a loose ball in the third minute.
Adelphi responded with an up-tempo offensive attack as Sam Nolan and Luca Boast ripped shots that would be saved by the Purple Knights' keeper.
The flow of the game was back and forth with a majority of the possession in the Saint Michael's end. The Panthers had their chances and some rough defense by the Purple Knights would not end up in Adelphi's favor as the game went into the half 1-0 in favor of the visitor.
Out of the break, the Brown and Gold came out flying. Rory Duggan continued to sprint down the left wing, beating Saint Michael's defenders and getting the ball into the box. Adelphi's best chances came in the final 25 minutes with a Ryan Holt header going high, a Tyler Herman chance stopped by a hard challenge and a potential Joseph Blackton goal being called offsides.
A corner kick in the 77th minute saw another prime chance for the Cats but once again physical defense from the Purple Knights was rewarded as they were able to clear their zone and get the ball back down the field.
Adelphi continued to pressure its opponent's zone, but shots from Jad Abbas and Duggan sailed high and wide. Saint Michael's sealed the game with a goal on the counterattack in the 88th minute to go home with a 2-0 victory.
Head coach Gary Book and the Panthers will rteurn to the pitch on Saturday Oct. 4 for a highly anticipated clash with No. 3 Southern New Hampshire in Hooksett.
