Bridgeport, Conn. —  The Adelphi University volleyball team rode a strong opening and closing surge to a 3-1 victory over the University of Bridgeport on the road Tuesday evening at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium.

After easing to a first set victory, the Panthers (8-6) fell into a seven-point deficit, but clawed their way back to a 25-17 win to stand at 2-0 for the match. Momentum quickly shifted in favor of the Purple Knights, who used several miscues down the stretch to seal a 25-22 set three win, to force another frame. Adelphi worked its way out to a 12-7 advantage - a lead they nearly let up - but a kill from Macarty McQueen sparked a 5-2 scoring run to keep their opponent at bay.

A block from Melana Bigelow and Delaney Kiendra kept the game in control for the Panthers with Kiendra getting the last word to take the final set, 25-20.

• Ana Carolina Westerich, dished 47 assists and chipped in eight digs. In the back row, Autumn Moore paced the defense with 18 digs. 

The Panthers are back in action on Monday, Sept. 29 when they head to Georgian Court University for a non-conference tilt, starting at 6:00 p.m.
