Lucky Seven: Volleyball Sweeps Georgian Court to Win 7th Straight

Lakewood, NJ - The Adelphi University volleyball team rolled to its seventh straight win on Monday evening, stealing a three-set sweep from Georgian Court in non-conference action by final scores of 27-25, 25-19 and 25-16.

The Panthers (9-6) used extra points in the opening set after the hosting Lions managed to reach set point on two separate occasions. Madeleine Chaapel and Elena Covic notched the final two kills of the frame to seal the deal and set the visitors up for a three-set evening. The home team tried to take advantage of seven hitting miscues and eight service errors committed by Adelphi, despite the Panthers using a .292 clip compared to the hosts' .075 percentage.

Covic was responsible for five kills in the opener and finished with nine on the evening, coupled with three block assists. The teams managed 16 tie scores and nine lead changes throughout the first set alone,

The Brown and Gold jumped out to a five-point advantage in the second - a lead they took on and never relinquished. The Cats of Long Island saw 13 assists from Ana Carolina Westerich and a pair of service aces from Katie Brokes bolster their efforts to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Alongside a flawless line from Macarty McQueen - five kills on eight attempts for a .625 hitting percentage - three other player each chipped in a trio of kills.

With a two-point edge in the third, a block from Casey and Westerich sparked an 11-3 run in favor of the Panthers which put the home team trailing by 10. With a lot of work to do, the Lions attempted to stage a comeback but could not string together more than a pair of points down the stretch.

For the match, McQueen led with 13 kills and Westerich accounted for 38 assists with 18 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and new career high on defense.

Adelphi will be back on its home court on Thursday, Oct. 2 when it hosts Felician in non-league actino starting at 6:00 p.m.
