Volleyball Oulasts Daemen in Five Sets

Wilmington, Del. - Using nearly every point available in the final set, the Adelphi University volleyball team secured a 3-2 victory over region foe Daemen University on Saturday, in the opener of the Wildcat Invitational.

With the win, the Panthers (5-6) have won three straight and look to even their overall record with their final match of the weekend against Holy Family University at 5:00 p.m..

After taking the opening set by a commanding 25-14 decision, Adelphi fell behind as the Wildcats (3-7) took the next two set decisions to stand at 2-1. With a momentum swing, the Panthers took the fourth set by a narrow five-point result, using a team hitting percentage of .323 to seal the deal and force a fifth and deciding set.

The Panthers were down 4-0 quickly, until Macarty McQueen broke the silence. A kill and service ace from the senior jump started a 6-1 run in favor of Adelphi, to put the Brown and Gold ahead 6-5. It was a true battle down the stretch as Daemen managed a 4-1 swing of their own to give them the upper hand at 13-12.

A pair of miscues from the Wildcat offense and a kill from Elena Covic capped the first match of the day with a victory.  In the end, McQueen added 20 kills as Delaney Kiendra and Covic both chipped in 11 each. Pacing the offense again was Ana Carolina Westerich, who saw 46 assists and seven digs on her stat line.

Adelphi finishes off the weekend with its final regional meeting against Holy Family University. The Panthers are 8-1 all time against the Tigers, with the last matchup featuring a three-set sweep a year ago.
