Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Rebecca Fakas and the Adelphi men's tennis team returned to the court on Monday afternoon for their home opener against Jefferson.
The Panthers and Rams went at it early on in the doubles portion of the match with two closely contested tilts. Spyridon Papageorgiou and Leo Silverston got off to quick start, winning their no. three flight 6-1. The no. one pairing of Louca Bertone and Thomas Horsley were able to pull off a comeback 7-5 win to give Adelphi the first point of the day. The duo of Viktor Hockl and Andrea Albiero followed that up with a 7-5 victory themselves.
Hockl carried his hot streak of play into his singles match, picking apart the Rams' no. one for a swift 6-3, 6-3 win.
Papageorgiou then put the Panthers in prime position after he beat his no. three opponent, 7-6, 6-3 after a highly competitive first set.
Bertone had to battle through his first set, but came through 7-6 on a tiebreaker which set the tone for set number two where he was victorious, sealing the match for Adelphi.
Jefferson won both the no. four and no. five singles matches but Silverston wrapped the day off with a bow, coming through with a victory in the last match of the day to give the Panthers a 5-2 win.
The Adelphi men's tennis team will return to the court on Saturday at 1:00 PM for a highly anticipated rematch of the Northeast 10 championship with Franklin Pierce.
