Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi women's soccer team looked to continue their hot streak of play on Friday night when they welcomed Southern Connecticut State to Motamed Field for their Northeast 10 Conference opener.
The Owls were the ones to up the tempo early, controlling the ball for the first fifteen minutes, recording four shots while also being awarded two corner kicks.
Adelphi's bend don't break defense held strong as the Panther offense began to get its footing. The offensive chances swung in the home team's favor as for the next twenty minutes, the Cats peppered SCSU's nets with shots.
After a string of chances and a handful of substitutions, Adelphi finally broke through in the 41st minute. Kayleigh Goodrich passed the ball up to Julia DeMicco who swung a beautiful cross right to Bethany Solari. The freshman beat her defender and sent the ball over the Owls' keeper and into the net for her first collegiate goal.
Hungry for more, the Panthers continued the attack with Julia Craig and Goodrich both seeing good chances at goal. In the 44th minute, Goodrich once again had the ball at her feet and scored another sparkler from just inside the eighteen-yard box to give Adelphi a 2-0 lead going into the half.
Southern Connecticut tried to claw its way back into the game, but the momentum it hoped to gain was once again thwarted by Kayleigh Goodrich. A cross from Solari in the 60th minute was sent perfectly to the reigning conference player of the year and the initial shot was saved, but Goodrich quickly cleaned it up for a 3-0 Panther lead. The Owls responded with four substitutions and were able to get one goal back in the 66th minute but it would not be enough.
The Adelphi defense and Peyton DeRouen would stuff every SCSU chance for the next twenty-plus minutes as they earned their first NE10 win of the season with a 3-1 victory.
Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will return to the field on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they play host to St. Thomas Aquinas.
