St. Cloud, Minn. - In just its second meeting all time, the Adelphi University volleyball team fell in straight sets to no. 10 St. Cloud State University on Thursday evening, inside Halenbeck Hall.
Competitive in each of the three sets, the Panthers (1-4) struggled to close out games en route to the team's second consecutive defeat.
Delaney Kiendra added a team-leading nine with an impressive .500 hitting percentage to boot.
The opening set was evenly matched through the 8-all stalemate, but a four-point swing in favor of the Huskies (3-2) set the tone for the remainder of the frame. Adelphi clawed back, coming as close as two, but the hosts prevailed on the night of their home opener.
Set number two featured much of the same play but the home team's offense could not be slowed down as they hit .353 as a group, compared to the Panthers' sub-.100 mark. After getting into an early hole, Adelphi took advantage of Husky miscues, but unfortunately it was not enough.
A three-point stretch to start the match turned into the team from the east coast holding a narrow advantage throughout much of the third. Ana Westerich recorded a service ace to bring the game even at 12-12, which the visitors coupled with an attack error from St. Cloud to take the lead. Back-to-back kills from rookie
Tessa LaFrenier gave the Panthers their first set point of the weekend.
Two straight kills from the home team however, capped with a setter error on the Adelphi side, closed the door on any comeback for the Panthers.
Westerich was responsible for 24 assists in the loss, as
Autumn Moore held on to 12 digs for the match.
On Friday morning, the squad will play Northern Michigan - for the first time in program history - at 9:00 a.m. (CST) before heading to Minnesota Duluth for their nightcap at 6:00 p.m.
