Indianapolis, Ind. - Two weeks ago the NCAA held its Career in Sports Forum, which helps former student-athletes map out how to continue their career in sports off the field.

Over 150 athletes attend the four day conference and through a nomination process, Adelphi’s own Pablo Ablanedo was able to take part in the prestigious event.

It was an amazing experience. The Career in Sports Forum helped me navigate the transition from being a student-athlete to the real world. They helped me understand the challenges I was going through, gave me tools to tackle them, and shed light on different, lesser-known paths within the world of sports.

The forum allows attendees to network with peers and decision-makers at the campus, conference and national level of college athletics. Throughout the four days, speakers prepare the attendees for success by touching on self-awareness and its role in professional development, practical approaches to the sports job search, personal branding, developing a career plan and managing yourself as a professional in the sports industry.

I was guided through the process of finding meaning and value away from the pitch. It was like they took away the ‘athlete’ label that I had on and replaced it with a ‘Pablo’ label, showing me that I am far more than just a student-athlete.

Along with guest speakers, the forum provides attendees the chance to speak to other student-athletes about future plans and offer advice in breakout groups, facilitated dialogues and just hanging out around the NCAA campus.

I leave Indianapolis with a lot of new friends and connections that I am sure I will keep along the line. I gained invaluable insights from inspiring professionals and above all, understand my responsibility to share all that I have learned with fellow student-athletes going through the same transition, as well as with hundreds of other international student-athletes that could be inspired by this experience. I definitely encourage Adelphi to keep nominating students every year. I am beyond grateful for the support that I have received from the Athletics Department to be able to get a spot in such a competitive program.
