Onto the Next One: Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Georgian Court, 23-9

Garden City, N.Y. - The top-seeded Adelphi University men's lacrosse team scored 13 goals in the opening quarter en route to a 23-9 victory over no. 8 Georgian Court on Wednesday, in the opening round of NCAA action.

Led by three different players who each recorded four goals apiece, the Panthers (16-1) saw nine points from Kyle Lewis, courtesy of a pair of tallies and a career-high seven assists.

In their last outing at Saint Anselm, Adelphi managed to give up a trio of goals in a matter of three minutes, and not wishing that happen this go around, the host offense laid it on thick in the opening frame. Before five minutes had gone by, the home team had scored five times, forcing a Georgian Court timeout. Gavin Herzog was the first to strike out of the break, which sparked a continued slide of Panther scores. Ten different players found the back of the cage including season firsts from Ryan Durnin and Gavin Herzog

After being held scoreless for over 20 minutes, the Lions finally got on the board with 6:41 left in the second. James Sandford's tally ignited the visitor offense as they turned a quiet first frame into a 4-1 run in the second. Michale Durnin and Noah Gibson scored within 10 seconds of each other to keep their opponents at bay, holding onto a 13-goal advantage heading into halftime.

The teams were even at the X in the third frame, as William Greaves finished 16-for-27 at the spot for the contest.

The damage had already been done as an immense comeback needed to be staged to overcome the defending National Champions. Adelphi is 5-0 all-time against the Lions, including a 19-6 season opening victory back in February.

GCU's Matt Dorrian contributed a hat trick in the Lions' first ever NCAA tournament appearance.

Head Coach Gordon Purdie and his squad will host no. 5 Molloy University on Sunday, May 11 at 1:00 p.m.. The Lions advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in program history following an overtime victory against Pace University on Wednesday in the opening round. The history between programs runs deep as Adelphi's Associate Head Coach Joe Catalanotti was responsible for starting the program at Molloy at the club level before elevating it to Division II in 1998.
