Pleasantville, N.Y. - Backed by six RBI from
Brianna Pearson, the Adelphi University softball team exploded for 18 runs on 19 hits to rout Assumption University on Thursday afternoon, extending its postseason win streak to three by a final score of 18-5 in Pleasantville.
Angelina Kellogg got the party started in the second frame, scoring freshman
Maddy Moore with her RBI single.
Scoring began to ramp up in the third after two sacrifice flies courtesy of
Courtney Wengryn and
Julianna Sanzone. Moore drew a bases-loaded walk herself, increasing the early lead to four after three.
Not letting the Brown and Gold feel comfortable quite yet, Assumption responded with a three spot in the home half. Kaitlyn Cahill started by breaking the Blue and White's shutout, sneaking a ball past the left field fence. A sacrifice fly and a later error put the contest within one.
After both teams traded RBI singles in the fifth, with Kellogg notching her second on the day, the battle headed to an offensively loaded final two innings.
Reeghan McCarthy, Wengryn, and Sanzone each collected a base hit before Pearson stepped to the plate. The senior took full advantage of her opportunity, hitting one out to the scoreboard in left center for a grand slam, upping the margin to five. The seventh only had more to offer, with Pearson coming back around to put double digits on the scoreboard for the Cats.
Makayla Comer and
Kaitlyn Klepper provided pinch hit singles, scoring a combined three runs. When all was set and done, nine runs had come across for the Brown and Gold.
Assumption started off the home half with a walk, but
Jenna Plue slammed the door with a swinging strikeout not long after, securing the Panther victory.
Lily Kenney battled through 4.1 innings, working around ten hits and two earned runs. Plue came on in relief and was dominant, tossing the final 2.2 innings and striking out four while allowing just one hit.
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos and Adelphi will be back in action tomorrow, May 2. The Panthers will square off against top-seeded Pace University at 12 noon from Pleasantville.Â
