Pleasantville, N.Y. - As the Northeast-10 Championship came down to the final three teams, the Adelphi University softball team lost its game against Pace University and Assumption University on Friday afternoon, by the final scores of 2-0 and 7-4.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, Pace 2
An early offensive burst from the Setters scored two runs in the opening frame, sustaining over the final six.
Despite a first inning walk drawn by
Courtney Wengryn, the Brown and Gold were unable to generate further opportunities before Pace came to the plate.
A leadoff single got the offense started for the Setters, with a later double and single back-to-back put the first pair of runs on the board.
Maddy Moore notched the first hit to right field in the second, with
Courtney Murphy following up with one of her own to start the third.
The first runner in scoring position for the Cats came in the next inning, after
Brianna Pearson advanced after a Moore walk.
Pearson tallied her second single of the game in the sixth, going down the left field line.
Starting pitcher
Lily Kenney put up a respectable line after the first inning, going scoreless over the next five allowing just five hits.
Game 2: Adelphi 4, Assumption 7
The nightcap saw a much different tune, as the day ended with more offense on both sides.
Right away in the opening frame, a single and double to left field scored three for the Greyhounds, with the Panthers reeling after one.
Almost instantly though, the Brown and Gold answered back with a three spot of their own. Zee Zee Shreter reached on an error to score Brianna Pearson to put the first run on the board. Reeghan McCarthy's two RBI single knotted up the contest heading into the bottom half.
While starter Jenna Plue held Assumption to only one hit, a sacrifice bunt scored the go-ahead run on an inning-ending play where McCarthy tagged the runner at third.
The game began to blow open in the next frame. A three-run inning came off an equal amount of hits, with two singles being the main drivers.
With Adelphi now trailing by four, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Moore cut the deficit back to three in the fourth.
Kenney came in to relieve Plue, tossing the final three and a third innings. The Connecticut native kept Assumption at bay, compiling a shutout off only three hits.
Adelphi's best opportunity came in the final frame, when two singles from Murphy and Angelina Kellogg brought the tying run to the plate. A flyout to center field put that momentum to a screeching halt, ending the afternoon.
Head Coach Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers now await their fate in the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, May 5. The show will stream live on NCAA.com at 10 a.m..
