Garden City, N.Y. - Resuming their previously scheduled contests that were suspended this past Saturday, the Adelphi University softball team swept its doubleheader against American International College that finished on Wednesday afternoon, by the final scores of 10-2 and 4-3.
Game 1: Adelphi 10, American International 2 (F/5)
The Panthers had just netted the third out in the top half of the third frame on Saturday, before the umpires met at the pitching circle. They then eventually called for the tarp to be pulled out, forcing the eventual suspension.
Before the tarp put a damper on the day's action, the Adelphi bats came to play with a four spot in the first inning. Responding to AIC striking first off a double to the gaps, graduate
Courtney Wengryn knotted up the contest with her own knock to left field.
Following two walks from
Julianna Sanzone and
Brianna Pearson, slugger
Ellen Tarjan brought home the second and third home runs, increasing her RBI total to nine in 2025. A groundout from
Maddy Moore upped the advantage to three after scoring Pearson.
Starting again on Wednesday with the bottom half of the third, the Brown and Gold picked up right where they left off. Four hits in the inning brought home another two, increasing the lead to four for some insurance.
Two more doubles from Tarjan and Moore got the bats going once more in the fifth, while a throwing error to second put the game one away from the magic eight run number.
Angelina Kellogg knocked a single through the right side to score
Reeghan McCarthy and put the Panthers up eight, ending the game in walk-off fashion early.
Starting pitcher
Tori Parente kept her cool for this one that stretched out across two days, not allowing a run after first pitch on Wednesday. The sophomore grabbed her fifth win of the year to get back up to .500 allowing one earned run off three hits.
Game 2: Adelphi 4, American International 3
The nightcap saw a much slower pace take place, even with both teams getting on the board in the first inning.
AIC struck first off a single up the middle, and starter
Jenna Plue escaped a bases-loaded jam later on.
In the home half,
Courtney Murphy lighted up the crowd at Ficke, dropping a ball that rolled past the right fielder right on the foul line, speeding her way all across the bases to grab an inside the park home run, the first the 'Cats have tallied in 2025.
The Yellow Jackets' Samantha Sanchez put the visitors back on top with a single through the left side in their half of the third. Sanzone got to third on a passed ball in the home half, but no more scores made their way home.
After an uneventful fourth, AIC doubled their lead with another single up the middle. Adelphi responded with a sacrifice fly from Sanzone, scoring Kellogg.
In the sixth, McCarthy and Moore's pair of hits applied the pressure, as the Brown and Gold only had so many outs to spare. Kellogg came up clutch once again, hitting a ball perfectly to the gaps to bring both McCarthy and pinch runner
Jordyn Pasqueralli to the plate to give the 'Cats their first lead of the afternoon.
A 1-2-3 seventh inning for reliever
Lily Kenney sent everyone home happy, securing the team's first conference doubleheader sweep of the season.
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos will look to carry their momentum into four conference games this weekend against Bentley and Assumption University. Action from Waltham, Mass. against the Falcons will start at 12 noon on Saturday, April 12.
