Waltham, Mass. - Despite scoring five of the matinee's six final runs, the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader against Bentley University on Friday afternoon, with the final scores of 6-5 and 5-3 in Waltham.
Game 1: Adelphi 5, Bentley 6
As both sides just hoped to get through the impending weather, a slower start ensued.
The Panthers registered consecutive walks to start the second inning, but the Falcons managed to retire the side.
In the third, a double steal brought home the first runner of the day in favor of the Falcons.
Courtney Wengryn broke up the no-hitter in the fourth, but the deficit was soon doubled after a single from the home team's Ella Bunovsky.
Starting pitcher
Tori Parente held her own for much through three as well, with a shutout off five hits. The fourth inning wasn't as kind, as a double from Bella Burke forced
Jenna Plue to appear in relief before an additional four scores came home.
The Brown and Gold kicked into gear for the next half frame, when two walks and a
Maddy Moore singled loaded the bases for the veteran Wengryn. The New Jersey native cleared the bags with her double to left, to slash the margin to two.
Two runners reached in the next couple innings for Bentley, but Plue made her way out of pressure each time.
In the seventh,
Jordyn Pasqueralli's RBI single helped the Cats threaten, and
Brianna Pearson followed up with one of her own to get Adelphi within one run. However, a flyout with two outs ended the first game.
Game 2: Adelphi 5, Bentley 3
The nightcap saw another tale, as it was the Panthers who got out to an early lead before succumbing to a late Falcon comeback.
Julianna Sanzone's sacrifice fly scored
Zee Zee Shreter to break the ice almost instantly, while
Reeghan McCarthy's single doubled the advantage for the road squad after two.
A dazzling fourth inning saw an extra three go up on the scoreboard with a pair of singles from
Courtney Murphy and Shreter, along with a Parente RBI groundout.
After the offensive onslaught that ensued for the first four, a home run from the opposition put two in the run column by the end of five.
Lily Kenney kept her composure through the mounting pressure coming from Bentley, accumulating four strikeouts by the game's end. A 1-2-3 final frame earned Kenney her sixth win in the 2025 campaign, allowing two earned runs and five hits off 97 pitches.
Head Coach
