Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team fell to No. 25 Pace University in two contests on Tuesday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field by the final scores of 9-0 and 5-2.
The results extend the Setters' win streak to 16 consecutive victories.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, Pace 9 (F/5)
The matinee saw domination from the Setters, as starter Giselle Garcia entered the day second across Division II in hits allowed per seven innings and WHIP.
Four runs came home in the first frame, via two singles and an error. Four of the first five Panther batters were struck out by Garcia to set the defensive tone early.
After
Ellen Tarjan knocked the first hit for the home side in the second,
Maddy Moore's walk forced a runner into scoring position. However, it was Garcia who took care of another on strikes to thwart the momentum.
A sacrifice bunt from
Zee Zee Shreter advanced
Angelina Kellogg into scoring position in the third, but a pair of groundouts sent the game into the fourth inning.
Pace managed to extend its lead to six on a pair of defensive miscues by the Panthers, after being held scoreless in the previous two frames. They tacked on another three in the following inning to make it a 9-0 advantage.
Despite Kellogg reaching second after a single and an error, the Brown and Gold weren't able to put anything on the scoreboard, ending the first game.
Game 2: Adelphi 2, Pace 5
Later action was more balanced, as the Panthers tied the battle late to put the road team in a high-pressure situation, risking their 15-straight victories.
Another pair of singles helped the Setters strike first, scoring two to start hot.
Brianna Pearson and Tarjan slapped two hits together to put the Blue and Gold on edge in the second, but a fielder's choice from
Reeghan McCarthy eliminated the threat at third and the run column didn't change from zero.
Two more hits came in handy from Shreter and
Courtney Wengryn, and a flyout from
Julianna Sanzone advanced the former to third base. Pearson then lucked into an error from the third baseman to score Adelphi's first run of the afternoon. Sanzone came up clutch again in the fifth, when she snuck a ball right past the third base bag to score Shreter from second and knot the game at two-all.
Jenna Plue kept the Setters at bay from the second through the fifth, retiring all 12 batters she faced. Three singles and an error in the sixth put a rain on the previous parade, tallying three more runs for the road team before
Lily Kenney appeared in relief for the second time on Tuesday.
Down to their final three outs, a pair of walks turned into two in scoring position. Despite the fans raving their support, consecutive popups ended the nightcap.
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will be back in action tomorrow to resume their suspended game against American International College. Adelphi will start the game batting in their half of the third inning at 2:30 p.m..
