Eighteen Hits Propel Baseball in 11-5 Victory Over SCSU on Senior Day

Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi baseball team returned to the field on Sunday afternoon for a rubber match against Southern Connecticut State.

Before first pitch John Carver, Johnny Catuosco, Jonathan Fallacaro, C.J. Picone, Jack Wishner, Gavin Graff, Philip D'Aguanno and Zach Rovner were honored during senior day.

The 'Cats started the game off with a bang as Catuosco crushed his first home run of the season to right center field to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead.

SCSU threatened with the bases loaded and two out in top two but a diving stop by Wishner started a double play to help Carver escape trouble.

The Panther offense kept it going as Giancarlo Rengifo and Greyson Pizzonia  drove in runs to put the home team up three.

The Owls came back with two runs themselves in the top of the third but Carver was able to work his way out of trouble with two outs to keep the lead.

Adelphi kept on coming with run support as the bats were alive throughout the whole game. Wishner drove in Jack Tate to increase the lead. The Brown and Gold struck again in the bottom of the fourth after a Giancarlo Rengifo single, Bryan McCleary sacrifice bunt and Greyson Pizzonia RBI single.

Carver would work his way into the sixth, finishing with a line of 5.2 innings pitched, two earned runs, four hits, six walks and seven strikeouts.

With two out in the sixth and Jake Sekinski now on the mound, SCSU loaded the bases down two. A hard liner was ripped towards Alex Rende but he fielded the ball cleanly and made the throw to Joe Pellegrino to retire the side.

From there, it was all 'Cats as they would score six more runs on timely hits from Pizzonia, Rende, Rengifo and Wishner. The team finished with a season high 18 hits as they took home an 11-5 victory to move to 16-13, 8-5 NE10.

Rengifo had the best game of his young collegiate career, going 4-4 with two RBI while Pizzonia drove in a career-high 4 RBI

Carver moved to 2-3 on the season and Sekinski earned his first save of the season.

Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team will return to the field Tuesday at 3 p.m. when they travel to Dominican (N.Y.) to begin a 15-game road trip.
